people that are concerned about their safety when riding on public land should take some responsibility for themselves
I totally agree with that statement. This also goes for stupid parents who let their kids ride 4 wheelers at 7am, on Saturday morning during firearms season on other' s private property. This happened to my inlaws, and all we heard prior to firearms weekend was the mother afraid her kids might get shot! Lordy, it was not even their land they were riding on![:@]

I'm not so sure the guy that shot the horse was a hunter. Shotgun slug? Stopped 16' from the house? Sounds to me like the guy had it in for that woman and killed the horse on purpose, and wouldn't have minded killing her either, since it looks like he shot directly toward the house. The press jumps to another anti-hunting conclusion before getting all the facts.[&o][:@]

Davidmil, I've seen much the same thing you have. The horse riders have taken over one of the biggest tracts of public land close to Dallas/Fort Worth. They've cut trails all through the woods. The small game that used to be thicker'n ticks on a wild hog are GONE. There is trash everywhere along the trails. The areas where they park are beaten bare of any vegegation. The trees are scarred up from where they run their trailers into them and tie their horses (against the rules of use, but they ignore the rules unless it suits them).

To be fair, most of the horse riders I've talked to are just as appalled at the conditions their trails are getting in as I am. Many of them I've talked to are hunters too. I've even caught a couple of groups out there picking up trash and stopped hunting (mostly stump shooting since there is so little to hunt) to give them a hand.

Just like in everything else, there are good horse people and there are bad ones. Maybe not bad... inconsiderate, careless oafs might be a better description. We've got more than our share of inconsiderate, careless oafs in hunting too. We can't weed them out any better than the horse riders can.

That really sucks about the horse being shot. I would tend to agree with Arthur though - sounds like it was planned. We don't know the true story so it is a shame that we hunters get represented by yahoos like this. There has been stories in the past in MI about hunters shooting cattle. These kind of idiots are out there just as Arthur pointed out there are idiots in the horse community. Can't everyone just get along?
