Hog Tactics
Hi guys,
I am going hog hunting next month and have killed a couple of hogs in the past but I need some advice. Do the hog calls I see do any good? What are some tactics that I could use to score on a hog on a ranch that gets hunted quite abit. I don't have a ground blind but could make one if needed. I was just wondering if still hunting would be effective if I used a hog call once in a while or what do you guys recommend? |
RE: Hog Tactics
3d...I hunt hogs like I hunt deer. Their noses are awsome.
I have a friend in Texas who owns a hog hunting ranch so I get to hunt hogs quite a bit. Hogs get real smart after they have been hunted awhile. If your going to hunt feeders just rememberthe big boys don't come out till just about dark. As far as hog calls go I've never had any luck with them. But I have had luck with making that soft low grunt they make when a bunch of them are feeding. After you hear it a couple times it's easy to do youself. I don't know what time of year you are going but if the weather's hot still hunt close to water. And good hog wallows are a great place to stake out. Good Luck |
RE: Hog Tactics
I dont use a hog call
all I can say if the rach has been hunted hard then the hogs are going to be smart probably the best way to go about it is spot and stalk If they have feeders set up and they have been hunted hard then the hogs wont come in till after dark. with spot and stalk just make sure you have an escape route ie a tree you can get up in a hurry them suckers can put some serious hurt on a man I know I have a 12 inch scare on my right thigh from a hog |
RE: Hog Tactics
I am hunting March 8-10 in North Texas. Is it legal to hunt the stands after dark in Texas? If so, what works best for shooting and seeing them?

RE: Hog Tactics
what part of nth Texas 3D
not sure if it is legal to hunt them after dark but I will do some checking around for you It might pay to call the ranch and ask them |
RE: Hog Tactics
When I lived in Texas and hunted Hogs on a friends ranch we took a coffie can 3/4 full of corn and add 2cups of water mixed with 4cups of suger...put it about 10 to 20 yards from your tree stand... always worked for me

RE: Hog Tactics
I hunt hogs here in Georgia. Two things they love are Food and Water. Find them and you should have luck with hogs.

RE: Hog Tactics
I've heard about hog hunting on this forum before, I beleive someone said because they are omnivor's that a distress call would bring them running? Good luck.:)<img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Hog Tactics
Mix a 5 gallon bucket of strawberry jello and pour it in the spot you want to hunt, we have used this for years and it has yet to fail us. They'll tear the area up and you can bet they'll be back for more.

RE: Hog Tactics
I hunt hogs near Gatesville, TX (about 45 miles west of Waco) and also near Jacksboro, TX. In both places, the BEST way to attract and pattern them is to dig a post hole ~3 foot deep. Fill it with corn, Hog Draw, strawberry or cherry jello, rotten vegatables/fruit, etc. Hunt it about 3 to 7 days later. If there are hogs, they'll come around. The reason for the hole is that they'll take a few days to a week to get all the food out. They make a wash-tube out of the area.
I've done a combination of a spotlight hooked to a deep-cycle battery shining on the hole to using a rechargable spotlight like I was predator hunting. Obviously, this is at night. The pigs rarely come out during the day around my area. I also have a electronic caller that I use. During daylight on another ranch, I actually brought a big one in, but he'd never cross the river. At night, you just know they show up, sometimes during the calling, sometimes after I've stopped. P.S. Make sure you do it where cows or horses won't fall into the hole |
RE: Hog Tactics
What kind of tape were you playing in the electronic caller? Was it one of the hog feeding tapes or a distress call?
|
RE: Hog Tactics
I have four "hogs-feeding" tapes, plus two piglet squealing tapes. I've found that mixing them up is helpful. They get used to one tape.
The best feeding tape for me has been Johnny Stewart, CT 127A Feral Hog Feeding Frenzy. I've never had the piglet tapes call in a hog, but they have made the coyotes go wild with howling. |
RE: Hog Tactics
Thanks Brian!
I have ordered one of the tapes. How do you set up to use them? During mid day or sunrise and sunset? Thick brush? |
RE: Hog Tactics
Your setup really depends. If you think you know the direction they will come, then face that way. Their eyesight is poor and it's dark so being relatively in the open doesn't hurt much. I've found that they'll work field edges just like deer, so use that to your advantage.
As far as the post-hole... I dig it in an area that a full moon will shine on, but very near cover. They don't like to come way out into the open, but 20 or 30 yards is fine. If you happen to hunt a full moon and have a good scope (like my Nikon Monarch 3-9x40), there is plenty of light without a spotlight. Be sure to turn your scope to 3, so that you get the most light to your eye. For timing, I'll get out there about 30 minutes before dark and then hunt until I'm tired. 10 or 11 is usually all I do, since I have a 2 or 3 hour drive home after. From my deer hunting trips, I can say that they work just after dark until a little after daylight. The hole with corn seems to make them come in earlier, though. I'm wanting to try an early morning hunt (3 AM to daylight), but I haven't done it yet. |
RE: Hog Tactics
Thanks for the info. I will be bowhunting and I thibnk he only allows hunting during daylight but I will find out about that.
