Chronic Wasting Disease
 

With all the talk about chronic wasting disease....are you fella' s (gals too), concerned about the health implications for you and your family as consumers of venison?
Secondly, here in New York State, our Department of Environmental Conservation tells us all to wear latex gloves while field dressing a deer. I have never done that. Do you folks all take that precaution?

I hope I would be able to reconize a cwd deer and not eat it. It is not a problem in my area yet but I have read up on it to try to keep educated. I never hunted bear but I do not wear any type of gloves to field dress deer.

I' ve only harvested two deer so far.... I wore latex gloves to field dress both deer - mainly to keep my hands and arms clean. There will always be the threat of select animals having diseases so wearing gloves couldn' t hurt. Also, with so many ' exotic' animals coming into the country who knows what kind of diseases might migrate from one similar species to another? Better safe than sorry.[:-]

Luckily CWD isn' t a factor in my area. The last couple years I' ve used latex gloves just because it helps keep me from getting so messy. I' ll use the gloves if I' ve got them, won' t if I don' t.

I' ve got a little bit of an independant study going on here. Of the 4 deer I took off this property last fall, 2 were positive for CWD. The 3.5 yr. old buck appeared healthy when I gutted him without protection. The personal study has to do with the buddy I gave the deer to.:D I told him the test results would take up to 4 months, took closer to 6. Long story short, he ate the positive buck. [:o] He appears to still be normal, I' ll keep you all posted if theres any change.:D

I' ve taken 1 deer of this property so far this fall. I did not use gloves. The wife says " not in this house without a negative test" . She don' t have a problem with the 2 I' ve taken from out of the zone.

Good thing is, the tests only take 3 weeks this year.
