Attacked by buck....what do you do?

I was just wondering if any of you have had or heard of an encounter with a buck that wanted to brawl? I ask this cause it almost happened to me during bow this season. I was still hunting one day. I succesfully stalked a buck to within 30 yards. At the last moment just before I was getting ready to draw, I was positioning myself and made a crunch noise. This got the bucks full attention!! he swung his head and gazed right at me for what seemed like forever. I remained motionless. It seemed like it was making him mad not being able to figure out what I was. Then he grunted 3 times at me and lowered his head. He stomped both feet on the ground and started heading towards me. I gotta be honest, this freaked me out. First time I' ve been in that situation. I figured before he got into a full charge, I best get up and let him know I' m the bad guy. So I did and he bolted off thank God. But it got me thinking. first, I wasn' t sure how to scare off a buck that was already in fight mode (I just got lucky on that one I guess). Secondly, what do you actually do if he does attack you??

I was thinking about that this morning on my walk in. It was dark and theyve been seeing a big bruiser with some does about every morning thats been chasing off EVERYTHING that gets near his does. I guess id just find a tree, or run like a little girl. Or better yet, pull out the knife, jump on him and wrestle him down and kill him bare handed....no, running sounds better.

I' ve read of wildlife photgraphers being killed by bucks during the rut.

Find the nearest tree and play ring around the rosey with him. Works for moose...I' ve had to do it twice as a kid growing up here. They give up after about 2 laps, you just need to keep your whits about you.

No trees? Stand your ground. Running away from any wild animal is useless. We had an old guy kill a brown bear up here with a knife a few years ago while being mauled. A whitetail shouldn' t be much worse. It just takes determination and balls.

Big brass ones! Bad Bad angle for a shot (this will rile a few hunters)but I think I might have to fling one his way. If he is that close I would go for a neck spine shot. I would never take this shot from my tree but face to face, 10 yds, him pissed off and unpredictable....hmm. I guess I would have to be there and make a choice as to fight or flee.

If he' s charging there will be no time to draw and shoot a compound...Trad maybe :D

Since we are fantising here....I' d be grabbing two arrows from my Kwickee and stabbing like a mofo.

I would probably whip out my .38 special snubby that I carry (yes, I have a Virginia CWP). The 2" barrel on that thing is only good and accurate out to about 5 or so yards.

RE: Attacked by buck....what do you do?

once you stood up and let him know what you were, if the deer continued in your direction, start letting the arrows fly. if the animal hasnt changed direction or stopped by the time it was 5 yards from you and youve sunk a couple arrows in its forhead and neck, start to imagine yourself as sammy sosa and your bow is your bat. it cracks me up to hear these guys say they might run or they arnt sure if they would shoot and especially AKdoug' s story about the guy being mauled but still managed to kill the bear with a knife. if an animal of that magnitude gets within knife range of you and isnt bleeding yet, god help you if you dont have a backup plan! if you try and run, any animal in the woods is going to catch you. here is my approach on the above situation and any situation similar, ie.. deer/bear/coyote/snapping turtle/moose/elk/, gun/bow season, private property/public property, california/alaska/ohio/texas

if im hunting an animal and i see it in the woods im hunitng, im obviously going to kill it, thats the reason im hunting. if i see an animal that im not hunting, i will make my presence known, if the animal motions towards me in an aggressive manner i will give it one more chance with a yell or throw a stick or rock or soemthing jump in the air, wave my hands over my head. if the animal still doesnt get the hint, i will then proceed to empty my chamber/clip/quiver into the animals head/chest/neck until the animal changes its mind and does an about face or falls dead in front of me. i dont care what the rules and regs are, i dont care if the animal isnt in season, etc. what matters is that ill be able to walk into a court house to pay whatever fine i need to without a sucking chest wound or antler fragments lodged in my spine.

RE: Attacked by buck....what do you do?

Well it happened to me this september. A 21inch nine pointer chased me outta my grandpas hayfield two weeks before season, how do i know it was 21 inches you ask? because i shot him the second day of season. This was the most territorial deer ive ever seen. I tried the standing your ground thing i was kneeling at first then stood straight up and yelled GET OUTTA HERE and he kept coming so i pulled my pocketknife out as a last course of action, he then charged and stopped at about 5 feet by then i had thought of everything thing i could imagine, how i was gonna fight him and everything i figured i cpould put my arms out to try adn get a hold on his horns but i had backed up close enough ot the fence then i turned and jumped into the woods, I got soem trees between us and slid down teh holler and he let up some then he came to the edge of the fence and made sure i was leaving. I dont think he woulda done anythign physical unless i woudla retaliated or acted dominant towards him he just wanted me gone. After i killed that buck i knew there was no way i woudla had a chacne fighting a mature deer like that he woulda killed me in a second.

this is a very real topic that we all over look. it doesnt happen often in the wild, but it is possible. always have your knife on your side....for one.

the last person that i heard killed by a buck was a guy in bucks county here in pa. it was a pinned deer and it was rut time. the guy enters the pin and GOOD NIGHT. the buck let those ANTLERS EAT on HIM. i think they had raised this deer from a fawn. some farm cut the antlers off b4 november.

I think I would' ve let him get a little closer and then take the wind out of his sails with a well-placed arrow. :D

A couple years ago, I was headed out to my hunting spot when a buck suddenly appeared on my driveway. He started to trot off, then stopped, turned to face me . . . and charged the truck![:o] He changed his mind at the last instant and angled off to the side, but still hit the front quarterpanel. I was a bit nervous about walking to my stand in the dark near home for a while after that!

RE: Attacked by buck....what do you do?

When you' re out there on your own in the woods, you are are completely responsible for your own safety. Good topic. If you don' t have a plan, you can be caught flat-footed if an animal gets nuts on you. You must be prepared.

When the cards are down, don' t take chances. Use whatever you' ve got.
Ethical shot placement and season dates are for when you are the hunter. As potential prey, all bets are off, and it could be " kill or be killed" .

Nothing else will matter if you don' t survive or are mangled for life.
Keeping trees between you is good, running is futile, and you' d better be ready for a down and dirty fight, because you won' t have time to think about then, and the animals have all the advantages when it comes to speed, power, agility, and having built-in weapons that they have used all their lives.

I' d keep DA revolver with me if I could, but the IL govt doesn' t trust its citizens.
As the next best thing, I always carry a fixed blade sheath knife with a 5 or 6 inch blade on my strong side hip. It' s long enough to penetrate into most animals vitals, but not so long as to be unwieldy while wrestling, and quicker and stronger than a folder. (although I carry one of those too) My skinning knife is a little 2.5" and it stays put away unless the animal is already dead. :D;)

RE: Attacked by buck....what do you do?

Don' t think you' d want to get attacked by a mature whitetail buck. I talked to a deer farmer who travels the hunting/fishing shows w/live whitetail - he got himself in the wrong side of a loading ramp and a buck antlered him, picked him up and threw him over his head and over the ramp. The guy was stuck from the antlers and broke several bones when he finally hit the ground. This was a 200# dude too.

This happened to my dad - I gut shot a nice 8pt which retreated to a pond, about 10 foot off the bank when we caught up to him. My dad approached him in the dark with a flashlight in his face and the buck charged up the bank out of the water after him. My dad fired his .38 at him, missed but the buck stopped, turned around and went back in the pond to greet an arrow penetrating both lungs.[:-]

About 12 years ago My dad walked me to my stand made sure I was ok and proceeded to walk to his. I watched a basket rack 8 pointer track my dad to his tree. My dad turned around through his coffee thermos and scampered up his tree. the buck finally ran off. Ever since then dad will not use any ruttin buck sents. they work to good. good topic, this rarely happens, but it does happen.

Shoot!!! As a last resort if you can' t climb a close tree you could wrestle with the animal but I think your best chance is shooting or tree climbing.

Well in restrospect which do you think would look better, a shot between the eyes or a tine up the ***. If a deer was trying to attack me shot placement goes out the window. I am going to put the first one where ever I can get it, to disuade him and then I will worry about where I hit him.

Funny this should be brought up now but my hunting bud called tonight and told me he shot a 8 pt this weekend in self defense. He was hunting with his brother in law and heard him shot so he headed in his directon to see if he needed any help, stopped and rested his rifle against a tree while he took off his coat. Looked up and there was a buck pawing the ground and even stood up on his hind legs pawing the air. Come to find out it was the same buck his in law had shot at earlier found a flesh wound on his back. Guess it most had ticked him off.

A year or two ago, I had a doe charge me, but that was my fault, I tried to use a fawn-distress call, I ran[:' (] . I can imagine a buck is a bit more scary(though, has anyone looked at a does front hoofs, pointy, eeek). I dont know what I' d do if I had a rut-nut buck on my heels.....I think my 6 inch fixed blade Buck Knife would see some action. I' m not as brave as Rack.

RE: Attacked by buck....what do you do?

I was walking along side of a woodline a couple years ago towards my stand and as soon as I stepped foot into the woods, there stands an 8 point, looking right at me. He was maybe 10 foot away. Well, you would think that I would freak, and I probably should have, but I just slowly and calmly nocked an arrow and as I started to draw on him...he decided he had enough of me and took off in the other direction. I think if he had charged I would have had time to shoot. Nowadays I always nock an arrow before I step into the woods. Yes its a pain in the butt sometimes and if I am in tight brush I will carry the arrow in my other hand, but I feel safer with a loaded weapon.

Grab my knife and finish him off.

Then what catagory would he fall under if you took him with a knife and he ended up being like a 150 class deer?? Makes me wonder.

I would run at the deer when he got close I would jump and run up his back, jump off his rump. As he stood there bewildered, I grab his back legs, flip him on his back and tie him up with my pull-up rope. I would then tickle him until he was in a better mood and then let him go.[:-]

Had it happen to a friend of mine, several years back.We were putting on a Drive,on State Game Land's,when this Nice 8 Pointer came by my friend at a fast walk.He pull's up and fire's,Missing the Buck. Not wanting the Buck to reach the Hill, and go out of sight,He get's up and start's running up the Ravine,to regain a better sight picture.Once he reached the Top of the Draw,he look's behind him,at the sound of leaves russling. He over ran the Buck, and the Buck layed his Ear's back,Rolled his eye's back into his head, with only the White's showing, and Stiff walked at my companion. He tried to turn and Run,And was Bowled over by the Buck.It tried to pin him to the Ground, and Ventalate him a little, but his Strength saved him, from a Bad Scene. He's one Awesomely Strong Boy!We heard him yelling for all he was worth. When two of the Closest drivers found the Scene, they told of the Deer and Jeff swapping end's,in a manner that would put the Wrestlers on WWE to shame. This Buck was shot off of him,by a Driver, after the Buck was howing sign's of exaustion.
After the ordeal was over,he was aas White as a Ghost, and never hunted the rest of that week. All he kept repeating is,Boy,are they ever STRONG,Ill Bet! Not high on my list of thing's to do.

I guess it takes you by a little bit of a surprise. You spend all your time and year after year hoping and trying to get a deer close enough to you. All the times you say I wish that big buck would walk right to me. Then all of the sudden he walks "right to you" (at you). Next time I make like the Steve the crocodile hunter.

Well Rack that statement right there explains a lot, it explains how you get some of those bucks you get, it also explains why you call yourself a "bed" hunter and last but not least it explains that satisfied grin on your face as you are with "your" buck![:o]

I have had deer challenge me per say, the whole foot stomping and coming my way also, but never had one charge me. Every encounter I have had of this sort so far has resulted in the deer simply moving on figuring that I am not a threat, some of these deer have wound up dead deer and others have simply went on thier way.

If I had one charge me I think (notice I said I think, because no one can say what they would really do until it happens) I would shoot him if I had the time, if not I would use my bow as a club and side sep him and hope for the best, if he got me down I would hope I could use my knife on him, but at that point a person kicks into survival mode and there is no real telling what one will do.

The one thing I can say for sure if it did happen is what I would do after it was over if I survived, I would change my drawers![:-]
