Grand Central Highway!!!
Wonder if you guys could shed some light on this. I was going for a stroll the other day after my morning hunt. I decided to go through this batch of thickets/hardwoods that' s probably about 8-10 acres or so. I hunt on 300 acres of land that is mostly food plots (cut corn, soybeans, swail, etc.......) There are hedges and some hardwoods here and there. Anyway after the orange people invade the woods on my property and the bordering properties, the deer sightings have been nill. They just won' t come out in the open now.
So I' ve been hunting this batch of thickets that I' ve found. This joint is like nothing I' ve seen before. There are runs (highways) and crossings and funnels like you' ve never seen. I stumbled on some scrapes and rubs here and there and I' m sure there' s a lot more, I just didn' t look that hard. I was just amazed by all the tracks and trails through this place. The thing is I haven' t seen a single deer go through there. I' ve set up in a few different places where 4 or 5 of these runs cross. Couple of bad things are: 1. there' s a road about 200 yards on the west 2. A wide open grassy field about 100 yard to the east 3. Posted land about 500 yards to the south (where I think they bed) 4. a road to the North It' s a small piece, but man what a highway!! Unfortunately I am kinda restricted to where I can hunt this little piece due to the geographics. My question is, do you think they just use this little place strictly during the night time hours heading from bed to food or viseversa? What are my chances of seeing something come through this during the daylight hours? Or should I resort to plan M? I realize it' s kinda tough to visualize my description and hard to comment unless you see it for yourself, but any advice would help. One more thing.... there' s a giant cliff to the east of this before it enters the grassy field and there' s a wide creek alongside the road. thanks |
RE: Grand Central Highway!!!
I' m not a morning hunter, but this is the kind of place I would hunt in the morning. Catch them coming through there to go to the bedding area!
Good luck! |
RE: Grand Central Highway!!!
Or get some night vision goggles... :)
If you are able to determine they are using it mostly at night, try to figure out from where they' re coming or going and set up there, maybe you can catch them during hunting hours... Sometimes the best way to hunt an area with huge amounts of sign is actually far from it. |
RE: Grand Central Highway!!!
It sounds like a great spot, what I would do is scout out several runs in there to where no matter the wind direction you can get into the stand with your entire approach being downwind. You will have to get in very early in the morning to catch them coming back and stay until the last possible minute in the afternoon to catch them coming out.

Sounds like a good spot to me, I would setup several different spots to where no matter the wind direction your entire approach and stand would be downwind of the deer, you will need to get in very early to catch them coming back and stay as late as possible to catch them coming out.

RE: Grand Central Highway!!!
It does soulnd like a great spot. This place is probably over looked. I know of a few places that are 150 yards from the road, and there are always deer in there, and nobody hunts it. Maybe look around a little and find out where they are bedded. If you spook them, they should still stick around. There used to it by now.
