Antler shed traps?

I know this is a little early, but I wanted to ask it while there were still a lot of guys visiting the board.

Have any of you used antler traps before? I guy at work was telling me about them. I guess the premise is that you take some metal posts and drive them in the ground about 12" -18" apart in early to mid January right before the bucks begin shedding their antlers. You then put salt or some other treat for deer in the middle of the posts and as the bucks try to get at it, their antlers hit the posts and if they' re ready to shed, the bucks will actually bat their antlers against them to get them to fall off. You check the shed trap every few days and have a better chance of retrieving sheds, if you' re into that. It also gives you a good indication of what made it through the season.

Does anyone have any additional pointers or stories of success with the set-up?

Thanks.

It seems to me that it might be a bit hard to drive some metal posts in the ground in the middle of Jan., with the ground being frozen and all! At least up here anyway;)! I kinda curious now!

I read an article on something similar. They put posts in the ground in the shape of a V or W and then they put chickenwire on it. With whatever bait, food or whatever is legal in your area they put it in the middle of the " V" when the deer bent down to eat it they scraped their antlers on the chicken wire, if it was time for them to come off they fell right there.

Also seen a picture of my buddies 3-D target in the spring that had an antler stuck into it. Apparently some buck still had a little fight left in him.
