I was close, but got busted!

Well, I haven' t said much here about a buck I' ve been following this season. I seen him before season started and immediatly began trying to put together a plan for season. I seen him once so far, the second Satureday of season, but he was at 150 yards or so, but I no trouble telling it was him. He' s an 11 pointer with what looks to be a 23-25" spread. His tines look in the neighborhood of 10 inches with a forked G-2 on the left side.

Ok, anyway, I setup before light this morning on a trail between two beds and a small field to my back. He has definitly worked the area as there have been some rather large rubs of late in the vicinity. I snuck in at 5AM this morning in the fog and got situated. Well, I sat all day without seeing a deer till 2PM. It was him. He came from behind me and with the woods being as quite as they were, I didn' t hear him. When I did finally hear him, he was about 15 yards almost right below me and coming! I though, " holy sh#%, what now?" He was slightly right of me, and me being right handed automatically put me in a predicament. He stood there at 10 yards and looked around and sniffed. I slowly turned and drew back, but he was quartering toward me with no shot possible. I stood there for what seemed like forever with the bow drawn waiting for him to make a turn. Instead, he looked up, seen me and bolted out of the area 50 yards and slowly walked around me and disapeared. :(

I' m still shaking from the adrenaline. I think I might have blown my only opportunity. It was there, just not how I planned for it to be. Only a couple days left and it looks like tomorrow is a bust because of dangerously high winds. I' ll have to wait till friday.

I would move your stand a little bit, if poss., and get back in there. Never underestimate a buck looking for a date!

I know just how you feel. I was at full draw for over 2 minutes on Friday morning waiting for this huge buck I wanted to turn broadside. He eventually did and when he finally reached a small opening in the branches, I overestimated the clearance my arrow would have and missed because of a branch I hit. He MAY still be there, but when I went back there Monday, I never saw him, but I DID see a set of truck tire tracks backing up to the exact area I saw him in. I hope he didn' t leave in that truck. [:' (]

I also have the predicament of high winds tomorrow, so I' m in that boat with you too.

Think of it this way...at least you had that much of an opportunity for him. There are folks that go by two or three seasons before getting a crack at the buck they are after. Considering today' s high winds I definitely think Friday or even Saturday is more likely to yield better results. I wish you luck with him.

...oh, by the way...where did you see him at specifically?

;)

:D

Yep, that' s the truth! ;) I' d be happy to have had the opportunity. The buck I' ve been after doesn' t seem to want to cooperate this season. He' s being stubborn. :)

Hey Pa, c' mon up, plenty of " other bucks" for you to have an opportunity at.:D Although, the Vipertec you said you would sell me may be a decent plea bargain. ;)

It was kinda ironic this week come to think of it. Last year, the last Wednesday of season, I killed my 10 pointer. I though history was going to repeat itself, but of course he had other ideas.

I am glad to get that opportunity though

I wouldn' t worry about it too much. Bucks aren' t going to automatically change their travel routes just because they thought they saw something. As long as you didn' t shoot, he probably wasen' t sure you were there. Try putting your clothes in wood chips to cover your scent and maybe move your stand--not far. If he went by there before, he will again. Stick in there.
