Sunday Hunting in PA ??
As one of the unfortunate few who have to work for a living outside of home for five days a week, the Sunday no-hunting laws in PA are finally starting to get to me. You’d think that after 45 years (33 of them hunting), I’d get used to it. Problem is the older I get, the more responsibilities accumulate, and the more of a bummer not having Sundays becomes.
Basically, the government is taking away 50 % of my free time. Normally, I’d say that there is nothing we can do. However, we recently passed antler point restrictions (which I once thought was impossible). We also have a 6 week bow season (once unimaginable)… Maybe there is something we can do.. What does everyone in PA (or CT or other such states) think about this, or are you just used to it by now. For me, I’d rather be out hunting on Sunday mornings than watching the Outdoor channel. |
RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
I guess i' m old school. I also have a job that prevents me from getting out during the week. I hunt both Ohio and Pa. And even though Ohio is now legal to hunt Sundays. I don' t do it. Why?? hmm I dunno, the law has just been changed in recent years, but I was brought up NOT hunting on Sundays. I guess I like the idea of the critters having a day to just be critters. I imagine if it was always legal it wouldn' t make a difference.
A second reason is I like to ride my 4 wheeler up at camp. We have some nice trails and permission to ride them, but if guys were in the woods hunting i' d hate to come riding through. So it works out well, Hunt Saturday and ride the quad on Sunday. |
RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
Tradition is no reason to keep ahold of an archaic blue law! The animals get to rest or be themselves every day of the year....hunting season is part of life for them just as it is for us. It should be legal to hunt on Sundays or illegal to play football, race cars, go fishing, etc. There is no differeence in these activities.

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
Count me in for Sunday too guys. PA is in the dark ages as far as that is concerned. There are a lot of us weekend warriors out there. Not by choice, that' s for sure. Responsibilities have to take priority. Speaking of weekend warriors, have you noticed that particular term has a bad connotation associated with it. As if just because I can only go on Saturday for the most part that somehow translates into me being somewhat of a lesser hunter. If anything...it makes me put more emphasis on my precious time afield and hunt harder.

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
Jim, I agree that the term ' weekend warrior' does sound derogotory and demeaning. I' m fortunate enought to have a couple weeks of vacation every year and get out of work at 3:30 with good hunting within a half hour of home. I do hunt most evenings and I often stay out of the woods on Saturday just becasue of the crowds.....I would likely hunt more weekends if I had more of the weekend to hunt. I think people see weekend warriors as " lesser hunters" because they don' t have as much experience....due to other obligations in most cases. But, you gotta hunt when you can and there is not one good reason that hunting on Sunday shouldn' t be leagal.....like in your case and in the case of countless others it would increase you' re hunting opportunities twofold. Good luck the rest of the season.

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
I am all for Sunday hunting. I myself work M - F as well. It would give me that extra day to be in the woods.
They are pushing herd reduction down our throats. How difficult is it to see that Sunday hunting would help thin the deer herd. Would not only give us a few extra days to hunt but would give us more oppurtunities! And isn' t that what Alt said, he wanted to give us more oppurtunities. |
RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
I' m with Alt on the deer management thing. He knows a heck of a lot more about deer than I will ever know. I am already seeing the results of the antler restrictions. I have seen more nice bucks this year than in the past. It should only get better from here on out.

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
We just discussed this on the Northeast forum and everyone agreed. Give us Sunday hunting.

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
Ooooooooooo...... Sunday hunting is a bad cuss word down here in Virginia! ;) It is that stupid archaic " Blue Law" from probably back around 1873 or something that has never been abolished. It makes no sense whatsoever! [:@]
I work M-F too and can' t always get the time off from work. Here in Virginia, they have those public WMA' s (wildlife management areas). Yeah right.... 9000 hunters against a 1/2 dozen deer! [:' (] (the other deer already got spooked off the WMA and onto private land - no hunting allowed - hey the deer ain' t dumb!) On any given Saturday, the parking lots look like convention center! Worse yet - Saturday during general firearms season on a WMA? Whoa.... let me just leave it with this: [:o] Butch |
RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
Most of the time Sunday was the only day I had to hunt. Now that im in Utah, and we CAN hunt on sundays, im lovin it. There isn' t much else to do anyway, others than watch football and kill a few brain cells. PA needs to let us hunt on sundays, and we need to convince them to let us.

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
I vote for Sunday hunting!!!
|
RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
Throw my vote in for it as well. It is a long time in coming. From what I hear there is some legislation in the house now but the opponents to it have it held up in committee.

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
That' s what I' ve been hearing too, Frank. There' s always someone getting in the way of things....we' ve been waiting on Wal-Mart ot come to town for years, but a few rich locals have it all tied up in rediculous lawsuits.

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
[>:]Sorry guys, I' ve lived in Montana where Sunday hunting has always been allowed and still couldn' t make myself do it. I feel we all need a sabbath day in our lives and while it doesn' t say anywhere that it must be Sunday I think I' ll stick with that one. There' s something about letting the animals have a break now and then that makes me feel better about harrassing them the other 6 days.

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
Don' t know why Church on Sunday is a conflict..
I go to church Sunday morning and then go fishing in the afternoon, or play football in the afternoon. What' s so different about going hunting.. Anyone know where we can call or write...Please post it.. Mabe Gary Alt can help with this one as well (and if he does, we should nomnate him for President) If Arnold Schwartzenegger can become governor of CA, we can get Sunday hunting in PA.. |
RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
I hear you Chris...I have been grousing about the Sunday thing for years. I have hunted in numerous states that allowed Sunday hunting and it was terrific. So many times (this past weekend for sure) I wished I could have had another day to really nail it down. But no...Have to wait until next week, when the deer have changed their routine for yet another time. Jim

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
If I could hunt Sundays, I' d buy a PA licence. I live in NJ and we can' t Sundays here either. It bites.

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
I' m in favor of Sunday hunting here in PA. I don' t think it' s asking much. And I do think it would help license sales. I have a few buddies that can only hunt on Saturday because of work, family, etc. They have not bought licenses in years because they can' t justify hunting once a week. At least Sunday hunting would allow some of us to double our days in the field.

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
I found the following interesting story at
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/dail.../s_163003.html Apparently the Governor of PA is now involved (11/03) and we may actually see something happen in the next few years. Because Sunday hunting equates to $$$$, even the laziest politicians will eventually take note... Now that $$$$' s are involved, I am confident we will have Sunday hunting in PA within the next few years. |
RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
If the issue is religion, I' d throw some separation of church and state their way.
I' m a Christian, and I think a treestand watching his world at work is a wonderful church... |
RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
Interesting article...We' ll see.....

RE: Sunday Hunting in PA ??
That Argument about wanting a day to themselves is going to be a strong one, not only from land owners, but hikers and the such also. Unfortunately, hunting season falls during some of the lovliest months to be outdoors in PA, and people love having a day where they can go out for walks, picnics, etc. without gunshots and arrows flying around.
Don' t get me wrong, I' m all for Sunday hunting and am enjoying it here in Nebraska, but the opponents will be strong in voice and numbers. Good Luck. Who knows, I may well be back living in PA someday and would love to be able to hunt Sundays. They say you can always go home... |
