RE: What kind should i get...PLEASE HELP
Depends how much you like heights?
The stands like the Summit Viper or the Ol' Man are great for feeling secure, but as a STRICT bowhunting stand you will have to consider how you shoot out of it. Not a problem really but you will be forced to think about it. I use the Summit Cobra XLS, and like the freedom of shooting options........you still have to consider the side rails a bit but much more freedom for a bowhunter only. |
RE: What kind should i get...PLEASE HELP
I own a Summit Cobra XLS and love it very comfortable and quiet and extermely light at 17 or 18 lbs, great for packing in. Go with a Summit, they are worth every penny you pay for them.

I own a API Grand Slam super mag supreme. It' s a great stand. There aren' t alot of choices out there for a 280lb guy like myself. I' d love to find something a little smaller and more compact for better mobility on longer hikes. No luck yet though.

RE: What kind should i get...PLEASE HELP
Lots of my friend are using the summit stands but I own an ol' man It is extremely comfortable. I bow & rifle hunt. I was in it on opening weekend & took a doe underneath my tree. I got up, turned around to face the tree & shot straight down... no problem. Check out the video for yourself. I posted it yesterday!

Buck88, I own the Summit Viper Ultra XL(' 01 model) and I really wouldn' t consider owning anything else. The footrest is an added bonus, it definitley allows you to relax. I have taken 4 deer with this stand and have never had any trouble with concerns to the front railing. That added feeling of security is a plus!
Summit is a very good company to deal with, also. They redesigned the carrying straps on this model and made them to short. A phone call to the company and new straps were in the mail. Good luck. Cutt |

RE: What kind should i get...PLEASE HELP
I want the cobra xls but my friend says that im to light am 160
|
RE: What kind should i get...PLEASE HELP
What do you mean your friend says your to lite? That makes no sense. I have the Cobra XLS and weight 175. I don' t know what weighing 160 has to do with what treestand you choose. My opinion is go with the cobra, there is nothing in your way in the front, and like Mat/PA said you only have to watch out for the side rails. Good luck

Guess I' m different. Get a hang on---then you can put it on any tree, not just the limbless ones. Get a ladder stick to go with it. I have 3 hang-ons set up that I hunt my land out of---you couldn' t sell me a climber.
Old and opinionated, Clint |
RE: What kind should i get...PLEASE HELP
The top part will shift no matter what you weigh if you don' t put the green strap on it. When you stand up and bump it, it will slip.

RE: What kind should i get...PLEASE HELP
Well I am with Clint.. My cousin put me in a climber on his property and that sum biotch wore me clean out. lol Not to mention it certianly was more noisy then climing sticks or tree steps. I hunted out of it twice in the same day. It was comfy though.
To be fair there are certainly pro' s and cons to the various types and I am sure that the more you use them the easier it gets, but for me I will stick with hang ons and ladder stands. |

Hunters View Hawk Cable Climber
$100 And it' s the most secure and comfortable stand I' ve ever used. It' s like a API GrandSlam but with a padded back rest, front rail, and side rails. All that padding sure does make it comfy. And it' s easy to use. It' s alittle heavy at 20lbs, but not too bad. I love mine. You can find them at most any wal mart. ;) |

SUMMIT SUMMIT SUMMIT SUMMIT SUMMIT SUMMIT SUMMIT SUMMIT SUMMIT SUMMIT SUMMIT SUMMIT SUMMIT SUMMIT
Hmmmmm, did I mention Summit? :D There is a reason that so many guys are suggesting a Summit stand, its not just because they feel like it :D If you are going for strictly bow hunting and you want as much movement as possible, plus you don' t want to break the bank, check out the Summit Bushmaster XLS! It is the stand that I have and I can tell you one thing, I have NEVER been more pleased with ANY piece of hunting equipment that I own. This stand is just amazing, simple as that. Why you may ask! I' ll tell you.... Summit stands are light weight. Granted, they aren' t as light as the Lone Wolf or the TimberTall, but, they are lighter than the API' s and a majority of the other stands, plsu, with this light weight, you don' t loose comfort at all. These things are ROCK solid in a tree. I have never had a problem with my seat moving at all. I normally climb up in the tree, when I get to where I want to be, i will jump up and land hard on the platform, this REALLY REALLY REALLY sinks the platform in, even though it isn' t nessecary at all. I will then adjust my seat to where I want it, and then I will push down on it as hard as I can, yet again, not nessecary, it just ensure that the stand budge an inch. Now, an example is in order. First, the warning..... DON' T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, now that I got that out of the way...... Well, one day I decided to test out my Summit and see just how well it would grip. It was a cold, rainy, windy day. I set-up my stand on a telephone pole, yes, a telephone pole, yet again, DON' T TRY THIS!!!!!!!! I climbed up to about 15 feet and got situated. I then put on my safety belt and jumped up and down on the platform, and the stand never budged an inch. That is performance considering that there is nothing soft to grip into, plus, the surface was wet, causing it to be slippery, and the cold made the telephone pole even harder. The stand is whisper queit when climbing and when in use. Now, it isn' t as quiet as a Lone Wolf, but, pretty close, but, with the Summit, you don' t sacrafice the comfort. These stands are STRONG. Watch Realtree Monster Bucks XI if you don' t believe me. Travis Turner bow hunts out of a Summit climber, and that guy has to be 400 pounds. If not, he is close to it [:o] Customer service is the best in the industry. Will Woller is THE MAN, even though he messed up big time on the Monster Bucks video (haha, I hope will reads this one as I am sure I will get a NICE e-mail from him then :D:D:D) I am just kidding Will, I bet all the guys in here would miss a nice buck like that, standing at that range, broadside, no wind-blowin.......... :D:D:D:D Comfort is where these stands shine though. I can sit in my Bushmaster XLS, which is the least " comfort focused" stand they have all day and not get any pains. The seats are so nice compared to any other stand I have sat in. I can' t even begin to tell you how many times I have dozzed off in stand. Heck, this comming summer, I might just sit my Summit up in a tree in my front yard and use that instead of a lawn chair (how redneck is that?) :D:D:D:D Try them out, I am sure you will be IMPRESSED........... Also, if you get a Summit, we can show you the secret handshake, and maybe, just maybe we will allow you to tour the " Summit Stand Users Cult Head-quarters" :D |
RE: What kind should i get...PLEASE HELP

RE: What kind should i get...PLEASE HELP
I don' t have a Summit it, but I' m working on it. lol I DO however have a Bear River climber Myles Keller endorsed model or something like that, but I love it. It isn' t the sit/stand style, it' s a hand climber, but I love it because there' s NO rails to worry about when it comes to shooting. Just another opinion though, so go with what feels right! Cheers!

RE: What kind should i get...PLEASE HELP
My Lone Wolf Hang on with 3 climbing sticks on it is smaller and lighter than 99% of the climbers out there. It isn' t any harder to set up than a climbing stand when it comes to changing spots.
I also have a Lone Wolf climber but I almost always use the hang on stand. Lone Wolf makes the quietest stand out there too. The platform is solid aluminum not hollow tubes. |
