well i swiched this year myself. i went to rockey mountain snypers. (via. 5-shots recomendation)
i harvested my first deer 2 days ago and i do not think i will ever change heads again. 25 yard shot passed threw the chest, front leg, and stuck in a tree so far that i was about to give up on it when i pulled it out. it was deffinatly open on entry there was at least a 2 inch hole upon entry. so impressive i had to stop by a friends house to show him the hole. yes that is a bigger hole than the advertised cutting dia. all i can figure is as the blades slide back they actually open farther than advertized before locking into place. 5-shot could probly explain better. i was using 100 grain steelheads although i harvested every thing i shot at i did not get the pass threws 100% of the time and it bothered me. |

Buckmaster........try the " Search" feature in the upper right corner.
There' s more info there about broadheads than you can shake a stick at. I just checked and only using the search term " Broadheads" in just " topics" there were 112 seperate threads to read. Which probably equates to about 1000 replies That should keep you plenty busy.......this same question is brought up about every 4 hrs on here.;):D Exactly what deer did you shoot double lung and it didn' t bleed? Did you find it to confirm the hit? You should have a blood trail if your shooting Q-Tips if you hit double lungs. [:o] |

I like the rockets mech. but change this year over to steel force magnums.Like to be able to sharpen my own blades and the rockets or most any mech.usefullness depends on your bow set up and are better for high speed bows.Plus the bades are so small there almost impossible to sharpen well.
Steel force also shot right in with my field tips.[8D] |

Buckmaster,
What' s a " Lighting" 3 blade? Who makes it? I can' t imagine even a dull broadhead not leaving a trail thru both lungs? Was it a pass through shot or just a high entrance hole with no exit? Most broadheads won' t leave much of a blood trail with a single high up hole. |
RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
I' m with Matt -
There should have been some blood - in fact I' m sure there was with a double lung pass through. I' m not saying don' t switch - maybe there is a better braodhead out there than what your using. Last year I had the 2nd shortest tracking job ever on a buck (40yds) and had exactly 2 drops of blood I saw. Granted, when I looked over the rise and saw the dead deer - I didn' t look real hard for more blood. My hit was High - with no exit hole. |

GOTTA LOVE MY MUZZY 100 4 BLADES
|
RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
i killed my first deer with a bow this year and i used a 100 3-blade muzzy. double lung and tons of blood. went about 40 yards.

RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
Another Muzzy 100gr 3-blade fan here.

RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
I switched just before season opened to GKF Deadhead Hornets 125 grain. Fly great and preformed very well in 5shots tests. The price is great too. I seen a post someone found them at Dicks for 4.99/3pkg

RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
I have shot 3 different heads this year and they all fly great.
100 grain 4 blade SteelForce serated 100 grain 3 blade Muzzy and the best of all has been the 100 grain Magnus Stingers. Can' t wait to see them perform on a deer. |
RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
Magnus Stingers are on the top of my list right now.
|
RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
Seems really odd to me, any kind of hole through both lungs should leave a very good blood trail.... are you sure you shot through both lungs?
|
RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
I' ll admit I' m one of the few who has actually ditched Muzzys...
Went to Magnus Snuffers, and I haven' t seen a tougher head. Heavy steel with copper welds. Wanted to have more confidence in sharp heads, without the cost of buying new blades every season. For the cost of new Muzzy blades, I can almost buy 6 new Snuffers; ~$20 per pack. S&R |
RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
I think it really all comes down to personal preference. I' m sure you can find someone out there somewhere who has had a bad experience with every head you can imagine. That' s just the nature of the business. Thing is, for the most part bad experiences with a broadhead or more attributed to poor shoot placement. As someone said, you could put a q tip through both lungs of a deer and have standup blood trail. But if you get a high shot, or a shoulder hit, or a gut hit, it doesn' t much matter what head you' re shooting - you' re going to have a tough time recovering that animal. Once again, just the nature of the business.
Personally, I shoot fixed 2 blade Zwickey Black Diamond heads. They have never let me down and passed completely through every deer I' ve ever shot. BUT, that is my personal preference. Some people might like the, others may not. I am a big fan of fixed blade heads because they' re a little bit more " heavy duty" , if you want to call it that. In the event I do get a bad shot and hit one in the shoulder, I would rather have a solid head with more mass to give me a chance at a quicker recovery, than a wimpy little expandable blade head that' s probably going to do little more than bounce off the shoulder. This topic could be debated until the end of time, but when it comes down to it - it doesn' t matter what head you shoot. It matters where you shoot it. |
RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
i used to shoot thunderhead 100gr --take in mind my arrow speed is about 253 ft per sec.they always shot good just had to make a few adj.---so as luck has it a new head was advertised called slick trick broadheads.thay are a 4 bladed head with a .30 blade so i ordered a pack.put them on my arrow and was real impressed--they flew the same as my field pts.as far as toughness i intentionally shot one into a piece of 3/8 in plywood at 30 yards.the broadhead almost went all the way though and stayed in tack.thay are new and have there own web site(slick trick broadheads.com)the blades slide trough one another through the head and lock into each other which to me acts like a solid fixed blade head.thier customer service is great and there email gets a quick reponse.alot of people will fall in love with them if they actually try them--check them out!

RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
i love the muzzy, anything Bad to the Bone MUZZY. shoot it in there and let it eat.
|
RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
I had the same thing happen to me last year on a doe double lung but it was a little high but no blood except where the arrow came out she went about 60 yards I heard her go down
|
RE: I am thinking of switching broad heads What one????????????
muzzy 100 grains 3 blades, never lost a deer, my friend shot a buck yesterday w/ the 4 bladers, i never seen so much blood and blew a giant exit wound,, plus replacement blades are cheap so you can practice with them, id stay away from mechanicals, besides them thinking, not true, they shoot the same as field tips thats just one more thing that can go wrong like the blades not opening etc!
