WOW, a whole lot of misinfo going on here.

For the record crossbows have no more KE than a compound. crossbows shoot a shorter and lighter arrow. They are heavier. Have less range then a compound. As far as a scope, at 30 yards or less how and the heck does it make a difference. They are a lot louder than verts. Arrow flight is almost always hard to get correct than a compound.

Advantages: Easier to get up to hunting speed with, but no easier to master.

Being predrawn can be an advantage or a disadvantage. I' ve hunted with both and it' s dead even. no advantage either way. I' m sure I have spent as much or more then most everyone posting here around crossbows. Me and my family have hunted with crossbows for as long as I' ve been alive. Why should they not be allowed to be used in the Archery season? There is no advantage that pretains to the actual hunt only to the prep time before the season. Everything else is the same ( or the crossbow could even be said to be disadvantaged compared to the compound) , so why shouldn' t hunters have thier chioce?

I hunt with both and will continue to. Crossbows don' t ruin seasons any more than any other type of weapon. Proof look at Ohio. It' s a great place to bowhunt. every year more huge deer are killed here and the deer herd keeps getting better and better here in Ohio. I guess I just find all this anticrossbow stuff really weird considering I' ve hunted around them all my life and have never seen any of the stuff some guys spout about them.

Too heavy, too loud, too inefficient, bad trajectory... But crossbows till account for more than half the archery deer harvest in Ohio, according to ODNR harvest reports posted on their website. Just thought that little tidbit of info might generate a little discussion.

I didn' t say they were TOO much of anything, I did say that they are heavier. How much depends upon the each bow.

As far as how much they harvest in Ohio. That' s a guess at best. When we check in deer here they never ask what weapon we use. The ODNR' s numbers aren' t worth the paper they are written on. They really have no idea how many ppl use crossbows as opposed to bows let alone what the harvest numbers are. Furthermore even if the number were correct they also estimate that there are more crossbow hunters than vert. bow hunters. so of course there are going to be more crossbow harvests than vert. that' s just common sense.

I didn' t say or at the very least didn' t mean to say that corssbows are harder to hunt with than compounds all I said is that they come out even in the end.

Personally I dont understand the big deal about compound vs. crossbow. In my club its split about 50/50. I happen to shoot a compound. Some of my buddies shoot a crossbow. So who gives a crap? We hunt together and at the end of the day enjoy a good meal and friendship around the camp fire. I can only guess its some kind of an ego thing for those that get so upset about it.

voodoosmc: So the majority of deer killed during Ohio' s archery season are taken by crossbow because the majority of the archery season hunters are using crossbows. Some people just might feel crossbows outnumbering conventional bows in Bow season is more than a little.... odd.

it is legal to hunt with crossbow in ohio all season. some stores cant keep them on shelves. also you can use any broad head you want with a crossbow. sure alot of people dont like them but hey i say of it is legal in your state use it. in ohio we have to use shot gun no riffle. so we have a range of 75 to 80 yrds average to shoot not 150 or 200 like with a riffle. to each his own.

as for noise. i use vibra tech limb savers it will quiet them down more than you think. it is still kind of loud but not near as bad as one w/out them. i have 2 on each limb.

Maybe we ought to hunt and fish with dynamite. It would simplify everything. As long as we are doing it on our land, whose business is it? It would make us all equal. The important thing is that we are buddies around the campfire at the end of the day. Just a silly thought...inteded to inject a little levity. Forgive me. Good discussion though. I am impressed that all have remained amiable.

Was thinking about all the deer I have seen on my way in and out of the woods. I truly cannot recall all of the times I could have taken a deer if only I was cocked and locked at all times. I know this has happened to all of us (if it hasn' t it will).

One of the biggest challenges for an archer is getting close to the animal and remaining undetected untill you can get a good shot off. It' s way harder to accomplish this when you need to make the effort and movement of drawing a bow in comparison to squeezing a trigger.

I' d really like to use a crossbow for turkey hunting. It sure would make it easier.

OK, not really I like bowhunting too much to switch even if I could, but you get the point I hope. Not to say I wouldn' t feel like I accomplished something but bowhunters get busted a lot drawing a bow. Take the whole draw thing out of the equation and things get much easier. I really have a tough time beleiving that they are that horrible to hunt with and they are at a disadvantage. Paaaaleeeeeeze!! If they were all that no one would want to use them period.

I' m not bashing. It just seems this major advantage has been diluted by a bunch of nonsense about how tough it is to hunt with a crossbow, and so on.
