For what it's worth, my father-in-law was bearhunting 2 years ago, and he forgot his sidearm. Well he had a sow and her cub come into the bait pile, and the cub started climbing his tree, got to about 5 feet from his stand and turned around. The whole time the sow was staring at him. If the cub would have started squealing, he might have been in trouble. He hasn't gone out without it since.

I have noticed a couple of replies that indicate I should consider using carrying a pistol. As I understand it, it is illegal for a civilian to pocess a side arm in Canada. Is that the case?

Thats correct, NO HANDGUNS IN CANADA (unless you're a canadian police officer). don't make the mistake of trying to bring one in, you'll regret it. Canada is very tough on the handgun issue and after September 11th the borders are EXTREMELY tight right now. I live in southeast michigan within 50 miles of two canadian border crossings, make sure you have your drivers liscense, birth certificate, and even a passport if you have one (not required but helps) Try to have any info and phone #'s of your hunting service/guide available for them to see. Just tell them the truth when crossing and you'll be fine. I have seen many cars literally torn apart by the border patrols, and they're not very careful with any of your equipment (your $1000 finely tuned bow)when looking. I don't mean to scare you Kansas, just want you to be organized for your crossing, have fun.

Ask your guide to allow you to carry a defender shotgun, I don't know about the foolish gun law's but Im sure they would. Good shooting.

Pepper spray is illegal in Canada also. It is considered an offensive weapon in Canada. A friend had his vehicle searched three years ago after he had given them the spray. The whole group had to go through a long interogation because of the spray after the search.

Carrying pepper spray is not an offence, Im sure alot of the fish and wildlife would rather a fishermen or hunter carry pepper spray then a shotgun, but shotguns are also permited, and allowed with a pistol grips, for reasons of defence against dangerous animals well hunting, As long as you are not hunting game birds you are allowed to have a shotgun that will chamber 8 shell's with one actually loaded. Note this may not all be exact to specs on regulations, but is close from my knowledge. Good shooting.

Every time I have crossed the border into Canada they have asked about Pepper Spray.
And every time they have said that you can not have it in Canada because it was considered a weapon.

No handguns allowed.
You will pay to take any firearm into Canada.
Even if you use the guides gun, you need a permit.
Most sprays are illegal.
Limits on alcohol and cigs.
Anyone with a felony or drunk driving will not be allowed in unless preapproved.
Taking a Quad? Wash off all mud!
You will also need last years hunting license

Talk to your Outfitter about these things. It can get real ugly, real fast. I go twice a year and get stripped down half the time.

The DUI question is a good one. Its a felony in Canada and people convicted of a felony cant cross the border. I had a friend with me on time that didnt have a drivers license due to a DUI she was not alowed to cross.
