Asking for Permission - Tips
 

Hi Guys,

Here are some tips for getting permission to hunt on private land. Add some more that you use

#1 - Start early in the year.
#2 - Write a Halmark Card letter. I put in there that I will give them a call.
#3 - Call them and ask if it is ok to hunt.
#4 - If they say no send another thank you card for their time. I put in my phone number and a calling card (20 min). I ask them to give me a call if they change their mind. (twice people have called back and said it was OK after getting the thank you card.)
#5 - If they are not sure make a deal- ask if you can help maintain or take down a fence, help with a project, ect, in return have access.
#6 - Never bring more people than you told them you would bring.
#7 - Never let someone else go out there without you or without permission from the owner.
#8 - Ask if you can lease the land for hunting only.
#9 - Offer to share any game that you bag with the owner.
#10 - NEVER SHOOT HIS/HER COWS!:D

And be willing to honor those rules. in reference to number #5...i have talked to landowners that have ask for help (with a fence or barn). The guy shows up with some friends and a cooler of beer, works until the beer is gone and then goes home. If your schedule doesn' t allow time to mend fences, then don' t offer to do it. Pick something or do something else.[:-]

11. If they so NO....say you will only hunt Bow. Many don' t like guns on the property.

12. Dont forget about holiday cards (Xmas etc)

13. Stop by every once in a while and show your face.

14. REPECT THEIR LAND****** Don' t leave crap around ANYWHERE!!!!!

15. When I ask permission, I don' t like to do it over the phone. Get in front of them face to face.

16. The guy that lets me hunt loves to see my pics from my game camera.

17. BE NICE!!!!

A lot times if they say no to hunting I ask instead for permission to look for shed deer antlers. That gives me the opportunity to come around more often and talk with the landowner and possibly offer any help if they need it. As well as giving them a chance to get to know me better on a more personal level.

Some people have trouble allowing any random person to go hunting on their land, but if they know you and like you on a personal level they' re a lot more willing to extend hunting privileges.

I always send some sort of gift at christmas time. I generally send a gift pack from Omaha Steaks. They really appreciate it and it is a small price to pay for private land access.

Be polite.

Dress nicely. At least wear clean jeans and don' t show up the first time all decked out in camo.

I know my landowner doesn' t prefer wild game meat so I buy them a farm fresh turkey for thanksgiving and an assortment of steaks, ham, bacon etc. from a local farmer for christmas.

I always offer some form of labor every time I see them. They haven' t taken me up on it yet but he' s building a new house on the property so I know he' ll need some help eventually.

I know he' s having problems with a trespasser right now so I assure him I am keeping my eyes open to try to catch the guy.

I own my own business " Tanning Salon" and what I do is say " Hook me up with a good place to deer hunt and I will hook you up with some tanning visits" . It has got me close to a thousand acres of private land to hunt, some good, some not but I have it all to myself.;)
