Fox problem?
 

I hadn' t seen a whole lot of deer this year and couldn' t figure out why until tonight. The neighbors around my hunting area have been having problems with the fox population in the area. It seems there is a den about 300 yards from my use to be prime spot. My question is how can a person get rid of them and still be legal about it? Fox season doesn' t open up until Nov 10. That is a month away and that is to long to wait. Any help would be appreciated. Chris

I' m sort of surprised to hear that Fox are impacting your deer herd?.........I could imagine that a full grown red could take a newborn fawn without much trouble but much beyond that they just aren' t the toughest critters in the woods. Most of my areas are polluted with Reds and Grays and the deer don' t seem to mind at all?
Sure you don' t have Coyotes?
I' ve seen deer ignore a hunting Red Fox already.

don' t forget about a bobcat . a big mature tomcat can take down a half grown deer down with no problem.i killed a 26 pound bobcat it was a female imagine a tomcat they can get around or over 50 pounds belive it ...they have been killed around here in tennessee.

go deep hunt hard.;)

as a hunter you got to know when to strike fast.

I agree with Matt. Full grown deer usually ignore foxes.

I' ll 3rd or 4th it - foxes should have zero impact on deer - even fawns.

It is interesting though - If the Fox population is UP - then its likely your Coyote population is down (not always the case - but usually true) - If so the deer should be in GOOD shope - so what' s really causing the low deer sightings??

It could be that you have a decent mature Doe population - If so - they will easily keep other deer away until the rut nears - even one Mature Doe can control up to 150 acres. I' m betting this is more the scenario - and I expect your deer sightings will improve as November draws near - keep us posted!

WalMart, looks like a rattler to me.

I have seen fox around where I hunt and never seemed to affect the deer. So, I don' t have a whole lot of info to pass on. sorry

Foxes might mess with a very young fawn. Last year I did witness a fox chasing 2 deer all over the woods. It was really crazy. Coyotes on the other hand will mess with fawns and younger yearlings.

One more vote for the foxes aren' t messing up your hunting area. I' ve watched deer and foxes in the same field on many occasions.

I agree that fox will have no impact on your deer herd. Heck, many hunters use their scent as a cover scent. I have a fox scent post within 50 yds of one of my stands. Very common to watch fox use it and have deer go up to it also just " wiff" it, without them spooking. If you feel deer are gone due to predators, then it' s big cats or coyotes/wolves. Tazimna

I will add another fox are no-problem

I have tons of them where I hunt - In fact there dens are a great place to find deer tracks in the loose dirt.

I doupt they even mess much with newborns also.

Ditto on the foxes not affecting the deer. I used to hunt a place that had probably as many fox as anywhere. It was illegal to kill them, they were everywhere. The deer were not affected at all.

I have used fox urine as a cover scent on my boots for the walk in. Deer are used to smelling fox and generally ignore them.

Thanks for the replies. I haven' t seen any coyotes or wolves around but I did find a set of cat tracks back in the summer but the deer were still there. I am going back in a couple days and see what I can find. Thanks again. Chris
