Mule Deer, Whitetail or Hi-bred?

This guy was taken in an area that is exclusively Mule Deer country. His body is, without question, Muley, but check out these antlers. They have a Muley brow tine, but all points come off the main beam. The G2 tries to fork like a Muley, but neither is over an inch. Scored like a Whitetail me makes over 146, but as a Muley is only 115. We thought we had a Pope & Young buck on our first archery hunt.

What do you think?

Tough call there, if I had to guess I' d say he' s a
hi-bred??? Regardless, that' s a great looking buck
[:-]! Who cares what he scores, record books are
overrated and tell nothing of the difficulty of the
hunt. Just because a buck doesn' t " score" well...
means didily squat;).

I agree 110%. That was a great buck, and Mitch went home with a HUGE smile on his face. It was a great time, we worked hard, and everyone involved was very happy!

Thanks,

That may be a hybred but it could definetly be a pure mulie. Where I hunt mulies in the mountains of Colorado there are absolutly no white tails and I have seen more than one mulie buck with a rack that looks like a white tail. Tried to stalk one two years ago but to no avail. May have just not grown the fork on his rear tines. Great buck either way.

I think the way to tell a hybrid is to look at the tarsal gland. A highbred mule/white will have an egg shaped tarsal gland. I recall reading this in a Bowhunter magazine a few years back. Nice buck!

Great buck!!! Certainly could be a hybrid.

What am I missing on the score? Why would one be scored any different than the other?

got one like that here 2. Muilies are pretty scarce here and a few years ago i shot this buck and walked up to it with my buddy. Looked at his nice even whitetail rack with NO forks in it. a main bean with points off the main beam. My buddy comments on the size of the bucks ears then i looked at the tail and sure enough she was tipped black. i showed the picture to one of the police officers in town and he didn' t even question the fact that it wasn' t a whitetail. i tagged it as a whitetail but it must have been a hybred also.
