Beginner bow hunter.
 

I want to get into bow hunting but am not quite sure what to buy. I cant afford a matthews so dont even say it lol. I would like to keep the price of the bow itself not to much over $300. All your help is appreciated.

I checked three places

1.) local pro shops for used setups
2.) Ebay
3.) Cabelas

my decision came down to a used hoyt at a pro shop and a PSE package at Cabelas. i ended up with the Cabela' s package. I am always hesitant about buying used, ya just never know the whoel history of the item. The fire flite package i bought was $299 for bow, sight, quiver, rest, 4 arrows, sling and stabilizer. In fact i think it is onsale in the stores for $249 right now.

I would highly suggest a pro shop type of place where they can measure you and you can test fire the bows, avoid places like wal-mart and Dicks

Look for Kits, ones that include a sight, peep sight, Rest, Quiver, ETC.

The Best advise is for you to go to your local proshop, and test out a few bows, find one you like, tell the guy what backround you have, and ask if he has any Kit options. a kit will save you a few hundred dollars from buying them new!! good luck, and welcome :)

Welcome and congrats on deciding to take up bowhunting. For $300 you can probably buy a used 1-2 yr old top of the line bow that would be better than any new $300 package bow. I would suggest visiting several pro shops and tell them what you are interested in. Shoot several bows in your range and pick the one that fits you best. Good luck.

All beneficial posts here. My advice is talk to your local pro shops to get an idea on what' s available and at what costs. Get various opinions and estimates. I' d also rely heavily on any friends or neighbors of yours who hunt. Chat with them and also ask if they will assist you during your purchase.

Lastly, I am concerned about your price range. Good bows can be expensive and cheap ones cheap. I would suggest you start saving or budgeting your money to buy a good bow. I' d hate to see you spend $300 now and then 2 years from now upgrade to a better bow after you figured out your first purchase wasn' t sufficient. Just take yout time and make the right purchase for you.

i just did some price checks at galyans a couple of days ago. and for like 279 you can get a kit bow (holt reflex) which is a pretty good bow. Just go to a sporting good store and take a look buddy. , just remember indians used to hunt with a branch and some type of string and a rock at the end of there arrow, and they did just fine, so any modern day bow will do the job, granted there are bows that are better than others, but they will all kill deer.

I' m not saying to buy one......but a Mathews FX is only $379 new around here. And it is a sweet bow for the money !!

Check your local pro-shop for a good used bow. You can save a lot on a high end bow that' s a year old from idiot' s like me that buy a new one every year or so....and take a beating on year old bows in great condition !! ;)

Plus you can get great advise and tuning at a reputable pro-shop !!

It' s great to hear about someone new getting into bowhunting. A smart way to go for your first bow would be going to a trusted pro-shop and purchase a used bow. My first set up only cost $150. Do a lot of looking and don' t be scared to haggle. Since the bow season is comming to a close you can probably find some great buys. Then in a year or so once you realy know what you want, sell your beginner bow and spend some heavy cash on just the right set up. It takes a lot of time to decided what all accessories are for you. Not just the bow itself. Take this first buy as an opportunity to find out what you like or dont like then when you want another bow use the first one as a reference. Ie. How much let off, What type of cam system... and so on. Most of all have fun. Good luck.
