I need advice on broadheads
Howdy,
Ok, I havnt bought new broadheads in over 5 years, so im in desperate need of some new ones. Which are the best. What brand should I go with? Fixed blade or expanding? 2, 3, or 4, blade? whats the best. Im hunting whitetail if that makes a differance. thanks. |
cant really go wrong with a fixed Muzzy, I wouldnt go more than 2blade on expandables...just too much can go wrong the more blades you get. I had good results with rage2 blades.
|
Muzzy MX-3 100gr is what I use. Love and havent had a single issue with them yet.
|
I use KillZones and have had great success with them. Or as others mentioned it's hard to go wrong with a fixed blade muzzy.

First thing first, if you've been happy with what you've been using so far, why switch? When it comes to new broadheads, there are a lot of good options out there to choose from. The best choice really depends on your setup and how you hunt. If you're using a newer bow with plenty of KE, you can use just about any broadhead you want, including those big mechanicals. If you're shooting an older bow or lower poundage, you'd be better off with a smaller mechanical or fixed head. If you hunt from a blind and plan to use the shoot-through mesh, a fixed head is the way to go. As you probably know, you need to have your bow well tuned. Other than that, it comes down to personal preference. When it comes to mechanicals, I really like Grim Reapers. They're well designed and pretty tough. Not to mention, they have a lot of options in terms of cutting diameter. For fixed broadheads, I've been using Magnus Stingers. They're tough, sharp and come with a no-questions-asked lifetime guarantee. I actually just got a pack of Dirtnap DRT's to test out, too.

I use 3 blade muzzy, dad uses NAP thunderheads.
|
Hell I havent been on here in about 5 years lol...well maybe not that long but seems like it...but I recommend 2 blade Rage. I have yet to have a deer go more than 15 yards on me while using Rage heads.

Slick Tricks 1 1/8 Magnum 100 grain
I tried too many heads just like a lot of guys. Liked Kill Zones, but gave them to my son. Have used Thunderheads, Muzzy's and Rages. I'm so old, I started with the Bear (with replaceable bleeder blades) heads. Now that I'm past all that messing around, I'm back to SLICK TRICKS. I get 3 or 4 deer most years and most die in sight. I don't like expandables & after 3 decades of buying replacement blades for fixed heads like Razorback, Thunderhead & Rocket, I decided to take a chance last year & truly adhere to the K.I.S.S. method. So I bought a pack of Allen Beartooths at Wallyworld $20 for pack of 3. They shot great out of my TenPoint xbow & I went hunting with them. I was rewarded with a 220#, 120class 8pt @ 12yds. I watched him fall 45yds from where I hit him. What more can you ask for?
So this season I bought 3 more packs of the Allen's, 2 for my crossbows & 1 for my youngest sons Diamond bow. I prefer a cut on contact tip vs a chisel or punch style tip so thats why I chose the Beartooths. Other than being $15-$20 a pack cheaper than equivalent Montecs, I don't feel I'd gain anything by going to a "big name" head. Good flight & a VERY dead trophy is all the proof I need. :s4: http://allencompany.net/archery/broa...dhead-616.html |
Switched from the mechanicals years ago and bought the 4 blade Muzzy 100gr. I liked the practice blades that come with the package, so I can shoot those all year and simply switch out to the hunting blades. I think I am one of the few people who like the smaller diameter heads. Tough to beat 6 broadheads for the price of most other manufacturers 3.

I've been very pleased with Slick Tricks, but there are many other good brands to choose from.
My primary advice would be to buy a mainstream brand, not some trendy, unique, or untried brand that you won't be able to obtain spare blades for a year from now. |
I made the switch from rage 3 blade to swhackers and I'm impressed with them.
|
well as you can see you will get a bunch of different thoughts and opinions and they all are correct for each individual as the ones i recommend as well you just have to try different options i started many years ago shooting punch cutters and they really worked like you wouldn't believe the blood trails were unreal now i use grim reapers and they shoot very well on my bow and leave a unbelievable blood trail and they have practice tips so you don't have to replace the good blades all the time try them if you get the chance and good hunting !!

I say keep it simple. Slick trick, muzzy , thunderhead etc.
I personally don't see any reason to add a mechanical element. I personally use the nap nightmare which is now called thunderhead razor or edge. The edge blades are serrated and interchangeable with the old nightmares and new razor. A simple muzzy has to be the best bang for the buck out there. g5 montecs are good ones if you prefer sharpening rather than blade replacements. |
shot muzzy for years really no issues... switched to swhackers last year and all I can say is I love that sound...4 shot deer and a total of 200yds tracking combined...
|
well not all broad heads shoot the same especially when it's windy out which it was always where i'm originally from was i never could trust broad heads to fly right in the wind.
|
I like the slick tricks. They fly great and are very durable. You will get slug holes with them
|
Slick Tricks are strong, sharp, and fly with field points. That fits what most hunters need. There are others that work equally well. I now avoid rages and other mechanicals after some bad experiences with them. I get maybe 1 good shot opportunity at a quality buck per year (my schedule allows me to only bowhunt 6-8 times per season. I'd rather not ruin that chance on something mechanized to work or perhaps not work. As others said, KISS and you will be happy.

A lot of them work...
but don't work for some that don't like expandibles; or don't like fixed blades; or can't shoot arrows straight.
Use comes down to how cheap you are and if you notice how expensive three little broadheads really are. That's a cure for some in not finding the best of the best. I'm only worried about if the three I bought - work. That electronic cash register can sure add up on broadheads. |

I use the Magnus Snuffers. Easy to sharpen and free lifetime replacement.

I may be the only guy who likes mechanicals....I LOVE the spitfire 100's....I have had devastating results on deer....shot muzzys for years and liked them....just decided the mechanicals are best for me....everyone has a preference!!

Tons of people love mechanicals. Every time a new bow hunter ask me about broadheads I say keep it simple and get proven simple fixed heads and probably 80% ignore me and end up with mechanicals.
Fixed blades don't need to open, thus there is no worry that they won't. I was younger then and thought by getting the "newest, most advertised" out there that it would help my hunting. It didn't. |

Agreed. I loved my mechanicals when I used them (spitfires, rage, steelhead) that is until they did not perform as designed ie blades broke on rib cage, (spitfire) did not open, (rage, 2x). Actually I have nothing negative to say about the steelheads, but I simply decided that relying on something to work a certain way, but it might not, isn't worth it for the animal or the short hunting season.

What do you think of fixed 2 blades?

I prefer fixed. I've never used mechanicals, but from what I've seen in the store, replacement blades cost nearly as much as buying new broadheads. Also, I'm worried that one of the mechanical blades could break off in the animal. How would you find that thin little blade to remove? Or worse yet, slice your hand open while cleaning the animal. I shoot Montec G5 Fixed blades, 100gr.
|
I'm currently using NAP Spitfire Maxx mechanical but think I may switch to a fixed blade because I feel like I have to keep buying replacement blades which add up over time. With a fixed blade, it's one solid break that i would imagine you can keep using over and over again as long as it's sharp.
