How to get this buck
I need some advice on how to get this buck that is visiting my stand in late evening. He is one of the bucks in the pics in this post.
http://forum.hunting.net/asppg/tm.as...mode=1&smode=1 He has visited my stand at least twice that I know of just before dark. I think he is scent checking and visual checking the feeder for does, but if they are not there he doesn' t come in. I have considered getting a decoy and setting it up with some Tinks 69 or at least just doe pee. Also have considered rattling and grunting to try to entice him to come in. He came by this Saturday night with enough light to still see well enough to shoot him if he' d just step out into the opening. He just usually comes walking down the fenceline from behind me and does not offer a shot, not to mention he is walking a fire break on the other side of the fence. He came in grunting like crazy, I' ve never jeard a deer grunt that loud before, but I guess when he didn' t see or smell any does, he just went on to the next place. I really want to get him before gun season starts because I am afraid he will go strictly nocturnal once the guns start going off. Any advice would be appreciated. |

Mike.
The easiest way to get him is to get me to come over and take him for ya[:o];):D |
RE: How to get this buck
Where is he coming from?? Try to intercept him before he gets to your feeder. This should buy you a little more light, and hopefully a nice shot on him.
Good Luck to you. |
RE: How to get this buck
Sounds as if he is searching for does so the decoy and scent idea could work.
If that dont work try setting back in the brush where the buck is staging. |
RE: How to get this buck
Move down the trail that he comes out on. If he' s traveling a firebreak, move that direction and set up. He' ll come out earlier and hopefully present you with an opportunity.;)

RE: How to get this buck
I' d probably set up near the staging area or further down the trail towards his bedding area. Like mentioned, this should buy you some more time, especially if you can get 100 - 200 yards closer.

RE: How to get this buck
absolutely, find his trail back to his bedding area or his staging area a couple hundred yards back down the trail . Set up a stand off the trail about 20 yards. Make sure the wind is in your face. He will get to you before dark and you should get a shot. Make sure you stay off the trail and when you setup the stand make sure you are scent free. I like to move a stand back toward the bedding area when it is raining or about to rain, washes alot of any scent away I left behind. Make sure you set the stand up in midday while he is in his bed. After the stand is setup let it sit for a couple of weeks. When the wind is right sneak in to the stand. I always carry in 5llbs of Buckgrub and put it out 20 yards in front of my stand in my shooting lanes. Stops them everytime especially when they are moving thru the area pretty fast. He will probably be traveling with a couple young bucks so he will probably be in the rear behind them. This is when you got to be totally scent free, spray down several times while your in the stand waiting for him. The younger bucks are going to get to you first and they are going to get past you downwind, so hopefully they will not wind you before he arrives. The BuckGrub can really help you here, most of times the younger bucks will start eating on it and will be out in front of you when he arrives! Good luck and stay scent free and you will bag this buck!!!

RE: How to get this buck
keep at him. everyone has good advice as far as I can tell, get away from that feeder a ways... try to bushwack him at a staging area, hes probably lockign up somewhere closeby waiting for dark before he moves in. Decoy sounds good, just get it to where he can see it at a good distance, not where he stumbles upon it, that can be more harm thatn good, from what Ive read. as usua;, get as scent free as possible, and NOT using any doe urine might be a plus too, to try at least. That will keep one less new odor out of the equation. I think stealth is yoru best friend right now, so he doesnt think somethings a miss. just a thought

RE: How to get this buck
Thanks for all of the advice. Unfortunately, wher I am hunting is in the corner of our property so moving back up the trail a bit is not an option. I think I just need something to get his attention and get him to come over the fence. I could always set up right on the fence line, but that still would mean that he would be on the other side of the fence. As far as I can tell, no one hunts the property adjacent to us, but I still just don' t feel right about taking him on the other side of the fence.
Here are a couple of closer shots of him. ![]() ![]() |
