anyone use a hunting log book
I was starting to keep a hunting log book this year. I figured it might help me optimize my hunting time in the future. Does anyone else use one? What type of info do you record? I have thought of stuff like, stand site, weather condition, temp, wind, deer seen, direction travel, and are they in archery range. What else would you record for future referencing???? Thanks for the brainstorming guys.

RE: anyone use a hunting log book
I' ve kept one for about 10 years - for both whitetails and turkey
hunting in the spring. Priceless information that I count on more and more. My log covers most of the things you' ve listed. I also take notes during the offseason while scouting and preparing stand sites for the next season. In addition to my log book, I make lots of notes on large b&w aerial photos - these are great for sharing info with my bowhunting partners. Great idea and good luck wiith your hunting! Two Beards |
RE: anyone use a hunting log book
I' ve kept one for the last three years. Keep track of the following: day, time of hunt, temp, wind direction and mph, attire and equipment, location of hunt and stand, activity. This is on every entry, but some other things I keep track of through the year: scouting, harvest times and what my buddies have been seeing as well. It' s pretty neat (and valuable) to check back over the last year or two to see the activity, temp, etc. I definitely recommend keeping one.

RE: anyone use a hunting log book
I really should have over the years but its funny........I can still pinpoint each tree that I' ve taken deer from. I can also remember the time of year and the weather. I pretty well log everything in my mind, even on hunts that were uneventful, BUT, tell me to go to the store and get a few things.....I forget almost everything!;)

RE: anyone use a hunting log book
I keep a notebook full of notes. I guess you could call it a log. I write down where I' ve seen rubs, scrapes, trails that intersect, when I kill a deer I write down which way the wind was blowin, day of the month, time of day, etc. all I have to do is go back over my notes and pick a stand that matches up with the info above. it helps a lot when you can' t remember like myself.;)

RE: anyone use a hunting log book
I used to have one years ago but it' s been lost. I took a 8-9yr hiatus from hunting and have moved 3 times in between. I have no idea where it' s at now. I have started a new log this year. I carry a notepad with me in the field and then enter the info onto my PC when I have the time.

RE: anyone use a hunting log book
I have and Excel spreadsheet set up with date, time, Game Activiey Index from a NAHC calender, moon phase, weather conditions, location, terrain, cover type, deer seen info, and any game taken. It' s pretty resourceful after just one season, but in the years to come I' m sure it' ll help out a lot.

RE: anyone use a hunting log book
If anyone wants the file shoot me an email asking for the Deer Encoutner chart. You' ll probalby have to personallize it some as mine is set up for the PA archery season.

RE: anyone use a hunting log book
I keep a journal of every deer that I see, it' s direction, the time, the temperature and the wind. I also keep stats on my two brothers hunts, we switch stands every so often.
