Great Hunt!.....Disaster...........Diet? What? Must read!!

So far I' ve been out 6 times and passed 3 nice shot opportunities on does. I decided to hunt this morning. At 7:30 a nice doe came from my left at 16 yards, I can' t pull my bow back! I try 3 or 4 times before she left. I was so bummed! It was 20 degrees this morning so maybe I was cold, I thought. I streched and pumped up a bit and felt good. About 7:48 here comes a fork horn from my left. I let it pass at about 20 yards. (I want to save my buck tag for the bruiser) At 8:35 a large doe with 2 fawns come by and walk all over the place around me. I pass on these deer, they mill around for 10 minutes. 9:15 a single doe comes from my left, it steps into my window at 12 yards, here we go, but I CAN" T PULL MY BOW BACK AGAIN!!!!!! I tried and tried. The deer leave. I start looking at my bow, is something bent or broken.......no. I pull it back with my feet, it felt ok. I start thinking maybe because I' m 20 feet up and pointing my bow down and trying to pull it back is harder. I' m thinking everything, but I can' t pull it. Then about 9:30 once again from my left here comes a huge doe. She stands broadside at 18 yards I CAN" T PULL MY BOW BACK!! She walks under my stand and I get another chance on the other side. Still I can' t pull it back!! I hear noise behind me, 3 does coming from about 30 yards away, DEER ALL OVER THE PLACE and I can' t do anything! FRUSTRATION!!

I get down and go in really puzzled and pissed. I shoot 70 lbs. I shot leagues all winter, bowfished all summer, and shot thousands of arrows for 8 weeks before opener, and even shot 3D hunting league. The last time I shot my bow was 1 1/2 weeks ago and I shot great!!!! All OF A SUDDEN IT HIT ME!!

I started a DIET 3 weeks ago! I' ve lost 18 pounds in 3 weeks. I must have lost a bunch of muscle. Bummer!! My bow is fine, but now I can just pull 60 lbs and had to redo my set-up.

The only good thing out of this: A big monster buck didn' t walk out!

Quite a day!!

18lbs in 3 weeks, dude thats not good, If your not working out and eating lots of protien, you were losing muscle like a big dog. Your body burns mucsle before it burns fat.

I' m with Buckshot. Way too much weight to lose in three weeks. You better check yourself man. About two pounds a week is plenty. If you are not careful, you are going to get sick and hunting will just be a memory.....

I am not sure what kind of diet you are on, but you need to get off of it quick! It is messing with your health, no diet is good for you if it weakens you.

sounds like you got your sugar (energy) levels all out of whack. You need to change something.

And then you woke up. I was waiting for you to tell us that you where having a bad dream. That would be a nightmare a bowhunter would have.
Take the diet slow besides it is going to be a cold hunting season and your going to need some unsulation and energy to keep you warm. And less food takes a toll on your immune system.

A good, safe weight loss goal is 1-2 lbs/wk. The " lose-weight-fast" plans are not healthy and typically once you stop them - you gain every pound back.

Sounds like the Atkins Diet and it is not a good one. No matter what anyone says about how good it is, it is not normal to lose the weight you do on it. No carbs in the body is not good, because like stated before, it means you are using your muscle for fuel.

I guess you learned a valuable lesson and a great tip for all of us. I always pull my bow back on a number of occassions when I first get to my stand. It gets the blood flowing to those muscles and keeps you ready.

Congrat' s on the wait loss, stay healthy and work those back, shoulder and arm muscles..... Good luck.

I' ve done the Atkins diet numerous times once the beer gut started to get out of control...it works excellent and I' ve noticed increased energy when on it. I' ve always maintained a work out regime while on it though which has seemed to keep up my strength. I don' t think I ever have gotten weaker and especially to the point that it would decrease my bow poundage by 10 lbs!

hdsanders, the Atkins diet is not a bad one when done properly. I' ve never done the actual Atkins diet but I have watched my carb intake before and it helps a lot. If you don' t believe me look on a box of cereal or something like that. A bowl of ceral will have something like 20-25% of you carbs need for the day, that' s a huge percentage. Then have a glass of juice and milk with it and you' re over 40%. That' s just breakfast. I would normally have a bagel or some big carb for breakfast and then not eat much carbs the rest of the day.

Not preaching, just sharing my experiance. Oh yeah, I was a Division I athlete in college and am still in relatively good shape....relatively.

Marin Cougar is right!!!! Lose the weight that fast and it' ll come right back when you stop dieting.

You might be thankful that you didn' t get your bow drawn, sounds to me like the second part of your nightmare would have been draggin out one of those deer.;)
You' d better get some strength back so you can drag out old big boy.

Atkins diet is the way to go. I have been on it for 4 weeks now and have lost about 15 lbs. Who ever said you lose muscle on Atkins is wrong. It is an all protien diet where you actually increase muscle density. I feel healthier and stronger than I have since I played college football. Atkins diet gets a bad rap but is truly one of the best diet plans out there. Mix in some excercise and you can' t beat it. Plus it' s a good way to make room in the freezer for more venison. It' s the only diet I know of where you can eat as much food (non-carb) as you want and still lose fat. Not to mention I have also lowered my cholesterol.

As many have said the Atkins diet is not a bad diet, as a matter of fact several very knowledgeable MD' s at work highly endorse it. The fact that you a suffering from what seems extreme weakness and rapid weight loss you have put you body in the self preservation mode. By making extreme cut backs in you calorie intake to lose weight you actually accomplish the opposite. Your body will start burning muscle more rapidly then fat and carbos which will cause the symptoms you are experiencing. If you want to lose weight without suffering in your present condition use the following. 1. You must cut way back on your carbo' s (especially sugars, and grains) intake, increase your protein uptake, drink plenty of WATER and perform at least 30 min. of moderate to high intensity cardiovascular exercise coupled with weight training at least three times a week. The best combination for most (not all) seems to be 60% protein, 20% carbos and 20% fats. This is just a staring point and you need to adjust from their. Reduce you calorie intake only to the point where you lose 2 to 3 pounds per week MAX. Most importantly seek the advice of a doctor prior to starting any diet or exercise routine. I have been training U.S. Navy Deep Sea Divers for many years and have seen many transformations using the simple routine I laid out above. LOL

Ok guys......it is the Atkins diet!!! The problem is besides following it to the letter, I' ve been eating drastically less than I should, even of the items that are legal. I' ve been skipping meals and just not eating much. I feel great, but my muscles aren' t. I' ll get it corrected!!

Thanks for the input!

I do really appreciate the comments! I think I did under eat besides following the diet correctly. I probably did lose to much to quick. Now two days later and still having an extremely sore tricept and back side of my shoulder muscle, I think I also pulled some muscles to its probably not all related to the diet. the last week and a half I' ve hung 8 new deer stands and bruched them out. Putting in tree pegs and clinging to trees, is also hard on the arms. I might have done something then to.

Thanks !
