had a good outing last evening
I took my daughter-in-law out archery hunting last night. And I took my bow along "just in case". I have a double stand set up with me slightly above her and on her left side. After about an hour into the sit I caught sight of a deer coming in on a fast walk. No idea why it was in such a hurry. I told her to stand up and get her bow and get ready. I could see it was a buck but not sure if it was legal because I could only see 2 pts on each side but no brows. (PA requires at least 3 pts on one side). At 20 yds he stopped and turned right and got directly above us at 13 yds and locked onto us. It was then that I could see the 1" brow tines. He did the head bob thing and the fake feeding head dip and everything he could do to get us to move. He knew something wasn't right but couldn't figure it out. He turned and started walking back the way he came. I told her to draw. She did and the buck stopped but there was no clear shot in the thick brush. He finally had enough and took off with no shot offered. I was impressed that she was able to hold her bow that long. I was at least a min.
About 1/2 hour later 3 doe came in but she didn't have a doe tag. But I did. The 3 of them were milling around the stand for a good 5 mins with one or another giving us a quick glance to check us out. I had my bow in hand and finally got an opportunity to come to full draw with neither of them paying attention. It wasn't much of a challenging shot. Probably about 7 yds but the angle was perfect. I cut loose the PSE and the Rage BH & Gold Tip on its way. The 3 deer took off in different directions and within about 10 we heard her crash. After a 100 yard and easy to follow blood trail we located her. I was surprised she went that far because when I dressed her the Rage sliced right through the top of the heart almost dead center. No wonder the blood trail was easy. But my opinion of the Rage is still out which I will put in the bowhunting gear review. |
