Rocket Steelheads.
 

Well I posted awhile back about getting mechs and I finally did. I went with the 100gr rocket steelheads. These do not come with instructions or anything and I would like to ask a few q' s to those of you who shot them. When replacing the blades do you screw the little screws in there as tight as possible, also how do you put these on your arrow tight w/o putting a lot of force on the blades in which case they could slip open an cut you. Also I was wondering how these heads perform on severe quartering away shots. I was told with some mechs not to shoot if it is anything more than a slight quartering away shot, and was wondering if this was true with these heads. One last question, they came with little rings that you put between them and the arrow, do I have to use these? Anyways they look like real deadly heads and I look forward to using them on some deer this year. thanks-Sam

Yes you have to use the washers, otherwise you will destroy your arrow inserts. I replace the blades and apply just enough pressure to the screw heads to firm them down, without really going heavy, they are tiney screws and easy to damage. As for screwing them on, I just use as much pressure as my fingers allow, and be very careful. The best method would be to use a leather glove, that way you won' t risk cutting yourself. If your bow is tuned well you should be able to take any reasonable shot with the steelheads as you would with a fixed blade head. They key is a well tuned setup and ethical shots.

Well I probably wont take severe quartering away shots then because fix blades do not hit well how I am setup so It is probably not perfectly in tune. All I was wondering is if only one blade hit would they tumble like other mechs or dig in and catch the other two blades. Thanks for the info.

Nuge, I think you' ll be plenty satisfied with those little steelheads. they were the first mechanical I tried, and their great little heads!;)

Do you guys feel confident taking severe quartering away shots with these heads?

With my well tuned setup I would feel comfortable taking any ethical shot with them, including steep angles.

Hey,,how about those blades.It does' nt even feel right calling them " blades" .I' ll call them thin little butter knives,,,that have killed a TON of deer[:o].
I use the Rocket heads as my " rule of thumb" ,so to speak.If I get a new head,mech.or fixed blade,I usually check the blades,to see if they are ATLEAST as sharp as the ones used on Rockets.If they are,,then I guess they' ll get the job done...[X(]

I have been using the rockets for 3 seasons and they have yet to fail me.They go in great and exit with a very impressive hole.Used steelheads once this year on a hog and they went in took both lungs and exited with the same size hole.Tried my rockets on the next hog but hit a little high but still got both lungs and left a hole big enough you could get a silver dollar in it flat.Hope this gives you some help in making your decision.[8D]
