I have been in the situation more then once and I did close my eyes. The deer seemed to relax.

I think most the time they are not looking at your eyes rather looking at your exposed skin.

Have you ever had a deer raise and lower their head at you? I' ve had happen several times and it always makes me smile. I just like to watch their reactions and know that they don' t know what I am. It' s nice to be that close to the deer.

I try to never make eye contact with them.it is just something I don' t do,don' t know if it makes any difference.
I will squint or turn my head just a little if they look stright at me.better to be safe than sorry.;):D[:-]

I don' t look directly at them if I plan on trying to get a shot, heck I try not to think about them if their a mature dear. If it' s not a shooter, I look at them, I' ll even wink at them to get a reaction. A wink usually is good for a foot stomp or a head movement and sometimes they will jump a couple of feet. One guy told me I was scaring the deer. I look at it this way, they encountered something different, they were suspicious but it didn' t hurt them or try to hurt them. Maybe next time they will be a little more relaxed.

I never make direct eye contact........I' ll look at where I' m gonna put the arrow, not at their eyes........

I read in the Deer HUnting Bible book, that deer are not actually looking at you, nor do they see teh difference in your camo break up, They have intense amount of cones in their eyes instead of rods, therefor causing them to have depth perception, and if your silutlet is covered it doesn' t matter the camo break up. But what the deer do notice and spook because of it is the UV light that radates from you clothes due to the detergent in your washing machine soap. They notice the light that is coming off of you and are catious becuase they are not used to seeing that. A good way to check the UV light that is coming off your clothes is to stand undernth those blue bug zappers.

but what about the fact that deer have evolved with the notion that a predator has 2 eyes in front of its head so i was told to close one eye when they are looking directly at you and not to think too much about it.

I' m basing what I' m talking about on experience in the woods not what is in a book. It had nothing to do with UV light (funny how most of those studies are done by companies that sell UV blocker that' s another thread ) . I have has a deer looking up at me when I moved my eyes(only my eyes) to see what else was coming in the deer got really spooky and stomped it' s foot. So I squinted and then closed my eyes, when I reopened my eyes the deer had started feeding. In the 28 years i' ve been hunting I' ve had this type of thing happen more then a few times. One of the deer I shot off the ground was ready to bolt until I squinted for about 4 minutes. He relaxed and I ate his backstraps in some olive oil and garlic the next day.

As far as the detergent giving off UV' s explain this one. I was using A&H with brightners shot 5 deer off the ground (no blind) with a bow 18 yards max. I have had deer come through when it was just getting light and never noticed I' m there. I' m almost 6 ft tall and 260 pounds I should have been as visible as a lighted sign on the side of the highway.Or the moon suddenly moved closer to the earth.

I too squint when being observed by a deer at close range. Once while walking down a trail I spied a deer watching me just letting me walk by walked so I didn' t stop just shouldered the gun and carefully turned while still walking backwards. As long as I was going away I posed no threat. So she thought.;)

I never look a deer in the eyes. I divert my look to the side of it, keeping it my periferial (spelling?) vision. Maybe it affects the deer, maybe it doesn' t. I have enough time to look at the deer when they are not looking at me so I don' t plan on changing. ;)

I do not look at them directly in the eye. I have been in the same situations mentioned above where, I suinted or turned away a little bit and they became less nervous.
