There is no shame in knowing and sticking to your personal limits.
I am glad to hear that as a new bowhunter you understand where that line stands right now for yourself and you will only cross it with more practice and experience.[:-]

I have 20, 30,40 yard pins. I practice at 40 yards but would never take a shot that far. 30 yards is my max. I’ve had shot opportunities at 40 yards but passed.

It' s usually suprisingly to find out how short most archers score on animals.

My longest shot was 42 yards, I had previously range finder' d a tree at 40 yards and the buck stood 2 yards beyond it....I double lunged this animal and he went a mere 30 yards. I am 100% confident in making that shot after shooting competitive 3D for 10+ years.

That shot was unusually, all other animals I' ve taken over the past 20 years of bowhunting have all been under 30 yards. It' s not that unusual for most bowhunters to say the same thing. Shooting beyond that in a woods enviroment is really unusual....I aslo commend the closer encounters on a deer call.....it just reels them in.

NOthing wrong with keeping the shots tight. I only shoot out to 25 yds, but most of my deer have been taken less than 15. I did however start shooting practice at a longer distance(40 yds) but still won' t shoot past 25 in a live situation.

Target shooting or stump shooting, I' ll shoot as far as I can see. When I was doing field archery every weekend, I' d practice hard out to 80 yards and I was pretty good at it. Used to do some clout shooting with my longbows at 175 yards. For hunting though, I like being within 20 yards but might stretch out to 30, if I absolutely have to AND if the shot ' feels right' . Sometimes you get an opportunity for a shot and you just know you can' t miss. That' s the only way I can explain ' feels right' . 30 yards max is my comfort zone for shooting at game.

This will be my 3rd year of bowhunting and I won' t shoot past 25 yards. I practice out to 40 but that target doesn' t move or flinch when I fire my bow either. :D
