Do you need to practice with mechanicals?
I was told that field points and mechanicals would shoot the same and that is why I am using them this year. I am obviously new to bow hunting. Do you have to practice with mechanicals too?

RE: Do you need too?
YES, scroll down the board there should be another topic about practing with mechanicals.

RE: Do you need too?
No matter what head I am using wether it be a fixed, replacable blade or mech I always get an extra packet and practice with them just to make sure everything is right.
Its to late after you have shot at a deer to find out they did not fly as the manufacturer says they do;) |
RE: Do you need too?
Always shoot any head you will hunt with - the field is no place for experiments.
Make sure your bow is tuned - mechanicals still need a well tuned bow to perform like they should. Also since you are new - practice in full hunting clothes a few times - bulky sleaves, facemasks and such can easily cause " surprises" that can be easily avoided with a little full dress rehersal. |
RE: Do you need too?
Good advice above....
Mechanicals are suppose to fly tight to your field points but they don' t always! |
RE: Do you need to practice with mechanicals?
I usually shoot 1 from the pack of 3...I won' t trust them if I don' t shoot 1 from each pack....then I mark the 1 that I shot and use it to practice with.....I only shoot them a few times, they alway shoot like my field tips...so far anyway.

RE: Do you need to practice with mechanicals?
Great advise so far, every brand of mechs is different, just like every bow! I use mechs and do not practice with my mechs/broadheads until a week before season opens. I use Spitfires and so far I have not had to change a thing, but you never know! Why chance it, both you and the deer deserve the verification.

Thanks guys.

RE: Do you need to practice with mechanicals?
I shoot spitfires, and I practice with their practice blades. Not matter what they say, ALWAYS shoot with practice blades. they say they fly like field points, but you should practice with practice blades to make sure that is true.

RE: Do you need to practice with mechanicals?
You should practice a few shots with the real blades also. Don' t take for granted that the practice blades fly exactly like the hunting blades. I shoot the muzzy practice blades but also shoot the hunting blades...never can be too sure.:D
