I' ve been shooting the Mini Maxes for almost as long and haven' t looked at another broadhead since I started using them. I' ve gotten passthroughs consistently when I haven' t hit hard bone. I' ve only had a few get away and those were my fault. The broadheads have never failed to perform perfectly.

Not that I' m any kind of a fan of Thunderheads, at all, but how do you know they were good hits if you never recovered the deer? Might not' ve been as good as you think they were. That' s the same kind of story that forms the basis of a lot of mech head failure stories - lost the deer because the head never opened. How do you know the head didn' t open if you didn' t get the deer?

The eyes can play tricks on you. I' ve done post mortum on quite a few that I didn' t hit where I thought I did.

Might oughta give the particulars of your setup: Bow, draw weight, arrow weight and such. I don' t know for fact, but the blade angle on those Vortex look like they' d need a whale of a lot of oomph to get them to chop through a deer.

I have been eyeing up the Vortex line of heads for some time now. I prefer the larger cutting diameter mechanicals because of the large amount of damage that they do, especially in regard to the entrance and exit wounds. With my current KE levels I have no problem shooting 2 inch Hammerheads through deer but a 2 3/4 inch cut would even better.

The only thing holding me back is that they are only a two blade cut. The three blade model does not offer more of a cutting diameter than what I am currently shooting. Is there a 3 blade model with a cutting diameter of at least 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 inches?

I used them for years, and ironically I hung them up for Thunderheads!:) I still contemplate putting them back on....the blood trails are amazing.

Frank, fear not the two blade....a 2.5" cut at any angle will cause mass tissue damage and blood loss. I' ve killed about 7 deer with the Vortec 100 & 125 two blade....KE is a factor, but you' re just fine in that catagory!:D

AP you are right you neeed some major oomph.But for a high ke set up they can be devastating.I have used the hammer head and the vortex.I think the hammer head is a better head because the blade angle is not as steep.

PA you may want to look at the Rocket Buck Blasters. they have a three blade 1 1/8 fixed and a 2 3/4 expandable cut. I bought a pack once, but have never used them hunting. Frankly, I can' t afford to shoot them. The staionary blades are pretty weak and will need to be replaced often if you practice with them.

Bow my friend,

Let me pass on a little story about one that got away from me....my hunting partner and I were setup on an alphalpha field in trees side by side....I was the shooter, he was the camera man....well..this buck comes out down the field...starts feeding our way...I looked at Doug and say' s you ready because the bucks path will put him under 20 yards and we' re gonna take him on film.......at 18 yards...he puts his head down, foreleg forward and stops....I couldn' t have directed it any better....I put my 20 yard pin on his heart...at 18 yards mind you.....and released....I SAW the arrow take the top of his heart out........I watched the buck run down the field....Doug pans the camera on me as the buck stops in the field and looks back.....I say, film the deer he' s going down right there....he says....nope...you missed.....I said, " LIKE HELL, I took the top of his heart off" .....!!!! He said, nope, you missed high......it happened so fast, at 18 yards the buck dropped out from under the arrow traveling at 286 fps.....and when studying the film....I clipped the top of his back....I still swear the arrow took the top of his heart off but when Doug said he ducked it, I glassed the animal and sure enough.....his back was cut....I was amazed and I learned to never, I mean never trust your eyes....if you hit the lungs, heart or combo...that deer is dead within 100 yards....if he isn' t you didn' t hit where one thinks or saw....

And I trust my experience as well as you do.....one never knows and a deer will always humble you....

I can' t agree more with, if we don' t recover the animal, we' ll never know what the actual hit was.

PS, we took that buck on video in late muzzleloader with a flintlock....his back was scared.

PAbowhunter, one of my catalogs has a rocket all mechanical with a 2" plus cut. It comments that they made it for people using the " buckblaster(or hammerhead-I don' t recall) and are still looking for more.
I can look it up for ya if you like.

I think the one thing that would seperate the mini-max from the hammerhead is the mini-max 3' s blades don' t look as if they will bend out of the way as easily as the hammerhead. I' ve heard the hammerheads turn into spagetti strings after the shot due to the steel bending (as it is designed to). The thickness of the min-max' s blades do not look like they would bend easily.
I replaced the o-ring of my mini-max' s w/ a rocket rubber band and it allows them to open much easier than before, but they still stay closed at 272fps.

I' m not sure if I' m gonna use them- yet. Post like this only really make me want to give em a go!!

All I can say is that I was very impressed with the entire lineup of Vortex/mar-den heads. They are larger, but the " smaller" two inch heads penetrate as well as most 3 blade heads with cutting diameters of 1 1/2" or so. As for strength, even the larger heads proved far more durable than I would have exspected. The 100 grn Mini-max steel solid is one super tough head I feel would be very suiteable for elk with the right setup. Frank You should look at the 2 3/4" 125, now I know it' s 25 grns heavier than you want to shoot, but Man that' s one big head!![:o]
