I' d say stay on the ground and forget your treestand. Walk into the wind and set up under a tree or in a thicket. Put out some doe esterous scent up wind about 50 yards from you and use a doe bleat call. Even if the doe to buck ratio is way out of whack, the bucks will be cruising for esterous does at some point. He' ll hear the call and try to circle downwind of it. If you don' t get a response in 15 or 20 minutes, pick up and move to a different spot. That' s what I would do. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

And if you can' t see them, they can' t see you! Thay will come in to investigate the doe bleat call. Deer are naturally curious and social creatures. They want company! Good luck.

If you can, get as near the thickets as you can, and set up a ground blind. Make sure your scent is eliminated. If you think the big boys are in/near the thicket, you got to be there as well. Use doe esterous during the rut. The key here I think is hunting the correct wind, and staying scent free. You might have a crack at a nice buck.

I' m just assuming a few things here.

1. There are some trees in this thicket that you can actually hunt from. (When I think of a thicket, I usually assume that there are not any decent trees to get into).

2. I am also assuming that these trees that are in the thicket are extremely hard to get into because there are no decent trails leading to them.


Now, if the thicket is too tough to walk through in order to set up without scaring everything into the next county. Then abandon the idea of hunting inside of it this year. Maybe next year you can trim some small trail to set up in a stand and trim a few lanes or wholes to shoot into. Problem is when you cut trail into a thicket, the deer are usually going to use your trails as runs, which is what you don' t want.

What I would do for this year, depending on the kinds of trees you have available would be to find where the deer are leaving the thicket to eat, then setup on the edge of the thicket or just inside. The bucks will leave the thicket to eat, or to chase does. You just have to find out where. You may not see the same amount of deer using this setup, but at least they will still remain in the thicket and won' t be pushed out.

Yes, your theory is correct assuming 2 things.
1. That you know where the deer are in the fields or open areas so you don' t spook them walking in.
2. That you don' t spook them walking out after the hunt.

You might try going just inside the edge of the thicket so the deer can' t see you and then you can get out with minimal noise and comotion.

That may or may not work for you. Most big bucks are pretty much nocturnal though. So you are taking a chance. The big boys will let their defences down for a brief period of time thoughout the rut though. If you want some expert advice, I would really poise your question to TR Michaels who has a forum here.

Seriously though, I' d try your luck getting at the edges of the thick stuff with the most sign(tracks, droppings) Be careful of your scent and bounce around stand sites so that they can' t pin you down. Once the rut kicks in, pick the best spot and sit there as long as you can. Don' t be afraid to grunt, to try and call them in. Good luck.

I agree with Wimp. scent control is so very important, even use rubber boots. Use the edges where the most sign is prevalent, and email him to hunt with you once or twice and he can show you how to better hunt your area. I' ve seen his posts for a couple of years and what he says is true.

It is quite similar here in Florida, as to how thick it is and the deer can just stand up from where they were bedded down to eat. You still need a good water source which is most important down here. Sometimes ya gotsta get in at least an hour before daylight if ya hunt the thick stuff, and the tree ya hunts from has to have a tree next to it that has leaves that will conceal you.

If you use scents get WILDLIFE RESEARCH PRODUCTS and follow the directions. It may seem backward, but it really does work.

If you try to use a grunt tube get a TRU-TALKER i is the most realistic sounded grunt I have heard. Get the tape and try to learn the different sounds, and when to use them.

Learn the proper way to rattle with antlers. You can find a video with instructions. If you can' t find the video then get a few books.

But remember, the easy way would be to invite Wimp to show you how to hunt your place.
