Texas bowhunters are you ready? Let the countdown begin.

13 days and counting. I can' t wait, especially with this cooler weather we have been having the last few days. This is going to be a long 13 days.

RE: Texas bowhunters are you ready? Let the countdown begin.

Hey Mike, I' m starting to get the fever too. I made myself a promise a month or so ago that if it wasn' t very cool the first 2 wks of bow season, I wasn' t going to go. Normally it will be " cooler" but still warm and humid with mosquitoes swarming like flies. I' ve spent some truly misserable days on the stand in early October. The closer the big day comes, the harder it will for me to keep that promise to myself.he-he As misserable as some of those early days can be, if the weather is nice and very cool, those Oct. days can be the best of the year.

Either way, I' m starting to get pumped!:D

RE: Texas bowhunters are you ready? Let the countdown begin.

I' m getting giddy myself!!

Txcowboy, I know what you mean about not hitting it hard at first. Each year I promise myself not too, but I end up strapped to a mosquito bitten tree any way.
The action pics up on my East texas lease right at the end of season. By then I worry that I' ve already skunked up most of my spots in the early season sweating like a pig and swatting at them pesky bugs.

This year if I just can' t stand to wait I' m only gonna hunt one or two stands until the end of October, then start moving around.

I have killed an 8 and a 9 on opening mornings in the past though.

It is the time for deep breathing exercises and quiet meditation. Patience is a virtue.

Too bad I' m a little light in that department.:D

I am pumped! This opener has been the only thing on my mind lately. The cooler temps have been a blessing just hope it sticks around. I' ve started washing clothes and getting everthing ready. Been shooting my bow daily and I' m so ready! Good luck to everyone this season!

I was wondering when you were going to chime in bootlegger. When are we going to pick up the new stands? I' m thinking Thursday or Friday. Why don' t you bring your buddy along and we' ll have lunch while were out. ;)

RE: Texas bowhunters are you ready? Let the countdown begin.

DaveC, I know excactly what you mean. I often feel like I over hunt my good spots in early and mid October when I know that the real buck activity isn' t going to pick up until late October or the first week of November. I think I shoot myself in the foot doing that. Also sometimes I will hunt so much (as see so little) in early October that by the time the rut really picks up, I' m getting tired of getting up early and hunting the same old places. Know what I mean?lol

Oh well this year I' m going hunting a few times up in NW Oklahoma on the Kansas border, so I' ve that pumping me up!;)

I have found a few places to put new stands, and seen some tracks in my area...probably be a slow start this year but, you never know. Good luck everybody.

Txcowboy, Same story different tree!!
Last year I passed up a new bows worth of overtime$$ in the early season just to get blown on by one single doe on a hot foggy mosquito bitten morining. I was ticked, not this year. Any OT comes my way early- I' m taking it!!

BUMP! 7 days zero hours and counting!

Oh Mighty bowhunting Gods,I have never prayed to you before...But could you please see it in your cold uncaring hearts to put a deer in my cooler this season? PLEASE! This is all I ask...And if do not listen...Then the hell with you :D

RE: Texas bowhunters are you ready? Let the countdown begin.

make it easy for em, ask em to put the deer in front of you, then you put it in the cooler. Of course it would be easier to track. :D

RE: Texas bowhunters are you ready? Let the countdown begin.

This is my first year in East Texas. I was on an awesome lease in the hill country in Lampasas county near Evant. The head guy and I just didn' t see eye to eye. I was there to hunt and tag out and they were there to shoot the first buck they saw and drink beer the rest of the season. I should have known it couldn' t be good when the guy' s nephew and sister told me he was an a#$hole. The amount of deer in that part of the country is almost beyond belief. It was common to see 30-40 deer in a weekend, as a matter of fact, if I saw less than that it was a bad weekend. Buck/doe ratio was whacked because of the guys not caring about shooting them, but I did my part to bring it back in line. ;)

I would really like to get back to that part of the country. I' ve been spoiled over the last three years and I' m afraid I' ll be disappointed with the lease I' m on now. You got any connections? I have myself and at least two others that are interested.

One week from this minute I' ll be in stand! I can' t wait, my wife thinks I' m insane...maybe I am? I just tell her that I need this. It keeps me sane!

RE: Texas bowhunters are you ready? Let the countdown begin.

Well, I' m not going to be hunting openning weekend:(
Starting on the second weekend though, I' ll have the whole week to hunt:)
I almost ruined my bow season, perhaps hunting altogether last Thursday!
I' ve been doing a few projects around the house, and was in a hurry to get things done before hunting season. I was building a patio cover in my back yard and slipped and fell off the roof!
The Lord was watching out for me though! No broken bones, just strained and pulled muscles in my left leg and back, and a badly bruised left heel.
Thankfully, I should be ready for the second weekend of bow season!

RE: Texas bowhunters are you ready? Let the countdown begin.

Jagmagman, don' t feel lonely on that one. ~ 3 weeks ago I flipped, cartwheeled and bounced my 4 wheeler. I somehow landed on my back face up and the 4wheeler landed smack dab on top of me (straddled me). I buggered up my leg pretty good and just knew it was broken= no bow season for me. But the x-rays showed only swollen muscles and perfect bones!!
I' m just now getting the bills in for e-room vist[:@]. But at least I' m gonna get to hunt!!

I will only be able to hunt opening morning for the first ~3 hours and then I have to head in to work graveyards[&o] that night.

Dave, man I' m sorry to hear about your wreck. How' d you do that? I hope you get well soon.

Yep the weather is looking good and would you believe that Friday on a 10 min stroll thru the woods I found 3 scrapes? I' m sure it' s just a bunch of young un' s but it was still exciting.

TxCowboy,

We found several scrapes on our lease in East Texas (Carthage) alost 3 weeks ago. Is this normnal for this area? Seems awful early to me. I am seeting up a game cam on the trails where I found them to see what is strolling by.

RE: Texas bowhunters are you ready? Let the countdown begin.

Txcowboy, how did I wreck? I wish I had it on video so I would know. I think I saw two little squirrles high fiving each other afterwards though.

Best I can tell I hit a puddle of water that was deeper than I thought with one tire and not the other. I was doing ~35mph (I had just looked at the digital speedo before the wreck) and went to ease around the puddle in the logging road. Next thing I know it' s cartweel city. And Yes I know how to ride. I have personally have put 4253 miles on this atv and countless other thousands on my 4 previous. I let my guard down and it bit me.

I thought I was in the clear but my left chest has started hurting something fearce. certain arm movemnts will light me up and it' s hard to take deep breaths w/out pain. It didn' t start hurting until recently(when I started seriously shooting again), so I don' t know if it' s wreck related or not.
I' m going in to get x-rays in the morning to see if somethings cracked. I' m not too sure the atv didn' t graze me when it landed:(.
I' ve got a whole bottle of vicadin (sp?) I might be taking on opening morning;), if that' s what it takes.

I even found 2 extra days vacation I didn' t know I had and took them for this weekend. I just hope I' m able to hunt[:' (].
