do you use this method.
i walked around the fence where i hunt at. and try to find where they are crossing. when i was scouting i found some preety good trails coming over fences.there is one trail is being used quite a bit.i found a good tree 15 yards off the trail. where i can climb up. there is acorns trees along the trail and there is a creek about 150 yards down the trail . this spot will be only used for bowhunting.i already seen a big 12 pointer at this spot, walked on top of him while scouting .have yall had sucess settting up off trails. and do you use this method . how many deer have you harvested doing this method of hunting. JUST WONTING TO NO.

RE: do you use this method.
That doesn' t sound too bad........keep the pravailing winds in mind. Pick the side that most often will be the downwind side of the trail. And don' t get any closer to it, it will limit your shot angles, and put you closer to their natural line of sight. Remember this is their turf, and they walk these trails everyday........a big blob hanging in tree 5 yards off the trail is gonna stick out like a sore thumb.
Make sure that you have more than one shooting lane as well........and oh yeah try not to place your stand facing directly perpendicular to the trail. An approaching deer will see you easier from a distance if you don' t keep the tree more to your back on an angle. Some background cover is a big plus. You are better off facing the direction the deer will come from ,stay still and shoot him when he gets beside you. Use common sense when you hang stands, and consider everything.......don' t just pick a spot cause it has a cool tree.;):) |
RE: do you use this method.
Your taking advantage of a funnel. Deer in a sense are lazy animals and will travel a path of least resistance that still affords them cover. Find these funnels are you can be very successful.
A man once told me, the best way to hunt whitetails is to put a fence smack dab down the middle of your property but leave a section out and hang your stand. All deer must pass through that opening...creating a funnel... Now that' s a little outrages but makes sense where pasture and old fence line for properties come in to play...and here in PA also are rock fences....same thing, an easy path and you' ll see deer. Good luck. |

RE: do you use this method.
Definitely a smart tactic. Play the wind as consideration #1 and then maybe sun location as #2 depending on if you plan on hunting it A.M. or P.M.

RE: do you use this method.
Oh Yeah! You' re on the right track! Just remember the wind and approach from the downwind side. Don' t cross the trail on the way to the tree either. Stay out of there until you' re ready to hunt. Good luck.

RE: do you use this method.
I have been known to tie a section of a fence down to make it easier for deer to cross!

RE: do you use this method.
One of my favorite stands is just inside a small draw where deer cross out of a creek bottom. They must cross a gravel road (and do, often lingering right along the road browsing forbs) to get to the draw. I spent the better part of a really hot Sunday a while back repairing broken strands of old barb-wire fencing, leaving an opening directly across from the draw...
Alls fair in love, war and chasing whitetails :) |
RE: do you use this method.
;)You have a nice set up there!!!! I have found out that deer love to travel along fence lines. don' t know why, maybe a comfort thing...don' t know. The wind will be the deciding factor in whether or not to hunt that area. I would definitely hang a stand, and hunt it when the wind is right. If the wind is not OK, don' t go in. It will only spook the area.

I will often find the same kinda spot on a fence line when hunting my
stands isn' t working, it has worked for me in the past. |
