40 Yard Pin

I set my 40 Yard Pin two days ago. However, I do not think I have had to shoot over 22 yards in all my bowhunting days.... What is your farthest bowkill?

You know this thread is going to turn into how far is too far right? I too sight in my farthest pin at 40 or 45 yards (usually don't even bother sighting in the 5th pin). I go with 20, 30, 35, and 40. Longest kill was 35 yards, but the vast majority were inside 25. I would bet money over half were under 20 yards.

I have never had to attempt a shot over 20 yds.
Approx. 20 yds for me.

Arkansasmountainman 09-27-2012 10:06 AM

my longest was 54 yds, double lung! we practice up to 60 but 50-55 is my max shot

My first ever archery deer was 40 yards from the ground. Jumped a bedded dow while walking back to my truck. I was young and hungry to get that first bow kill, luckily i made a perfect shot and she only went 20 yards. I would not attempt that same shot today but i do have a 40 and 50 yard pin set, but only for fun when target shooting.

56 yards made a perfect shot but we practice all year at that range and further. I like em in there about 20-25 Just getting them close as possible gets the ole heart a beaten even faster

ManofTheFall 09-27-2012 12:42 PM

My longest shot was 32 yards. I have probably killed nearly 70 deer with my bow. I would guess 60 of those have been 5-18 yards. 8 of those from 18-25 yards. 1 shot between 25 and 30 yards, and the last one at 32. I have 3 pins set. 20, 30, and 40 yards.

40 is not unethical at all. A poor shot is unethical, regardless of the distance. Some people can make extremely long shots, some like them under 20 yds. I prefer close shots any day, but am more than ready with my 40 yd pin to lay one down. If you know the distance and shoot it correctly, what could the problem be? 15 is obviously premier.

45 yards is the farthest I have ever shot one... I got lucky, I ended up shooting low, but the buck dropped and it ended up making it a perfect shot.. I only have three pins. first pin good for 10 to 36 yards, second one good for 37 to 43, third good for 44 to 50.. Most of my kills are within 30 yards... Closest was 15, farthest 45.. Season starts on Monday ( Oct 1st ) Cant wait to get out there....

it depends on if its a straight shot or if i have to ricochet it off of something!!!!! LOL

deerlogic 09-28-2012 12:22 PM

Ya - I set a 40 Yard pin, but I do not see me shooting that far... One thing is the 40 yard pin makes the 20 and 30 yard shots seem easy...

My longest shot to date was last year. 55 Yds. and get this, I shoot a 1970's Jennings. It was a doe. She piled up only 70Yds. away. I sight in 3 pins 20,30,40

Mibowhunter91 09-29-2012 05:40 AM

i think my farthest shot was 40 yards. My farthest pin is set at 60 and i practice out there it makes the closer shots seem simple....will i ever shoot at a deer at 60 no thats not the reason for that pin. Some people do alot amd good for them where i hunt most of the time any shot you can get is under 20

trs 09-29-2012 10:20 AM

I say if your comfortable with your shot let it fly.

I practice to 65 yds and can put arrows on target with confidence at that distance however I would never take that shot when hunting. When spot and stalk hunting the biggest thrill in the hunt is getting in as close as possible which has no set distance but is usually in the area of 40 yds. I also hunt from a treestand which really limits the distance due to obstructed shooting lanes but then again it's such a thrill watching that deer come in.

deerlogic 09-29-2012 04:26 PM

If you cn shoot a 2 inch group at 40 yards you can drill a heart/ling shot every time.... As long as you can control your nerves.

Mibowhunter91 09-29-2012 04:51 PM

I agree but to me much farther than 40 there are to many factors that are.out of.my.control....now saying that I'm sure if I lived farther out west where longer shots are needed I may see this differently

Bluetickhunter 09-30-2012 06:23 PM

mine was 54yrds made good shot deer went 60yrds and piled up but I shoot 3D year round out to 100yrds most of mine are in the 20-30 range closest was 6 yards and i shot that last thursday on first sit of year on first buck of year was even alittle to close if ya know what I mean

kyslayer 09-30-2012 06:26 PM
