Help with arrow flight...............
Ok guys, everyday I go out and shoot about 20-30 arrows. I take my first shot from 25yds everytime. Almost without fail that first shot hits about 5-6 inches to the right of where I am aiming. Once I shoot a couple arrows, I start stroking the bullseye. Whats my problem? Also, when I do miss its almost always to the right? I don' t think I am dropping by bow arm to the right, but I guess I could be subconscienously(sp) doing it. Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Help with arrow flight...............
If you' re left handed, you could be canting your bow to the right. That would cause you to hit right.
Other than that, you may be starting out with a different grip, and torqueing the bow. After shooting a few times, the bow then slides into the proper spot on your hand where you have your bow set up for. I solved this problem by wearing a jersey glove for all my shooting. 3-D, Indoor, hunting, everything. I always have that plain old brown jersey glove on my hand. |
RE: Help with arrow flight...............
You might be peaking, trying to see where the arrow hit' s before you finish the follow through. When I miss, it' s usually right and it' s cause I' m peaking. Buckle down and follow through. Good luck Belle.

RE: Help with arrow flight...............
I think it' s a short warm up period. Muscle memory needs to re-establish itself. The same thing used to happen to me. Now that I have finally settled on what is comfortable, repeatable form, the first shots are in there every time.

RE: Help with arrow flight...............
Thanks guys, I have definitely narrowed it down to either grip torque or like Rob said, I' m peaking. I' ve always had a bad habit of try to get a peak of the arrow during flight. I hope I can get this corrected before opener.

RE: Help with arrow flight...............
Bowdacious, I do shoot with a wrist strap and semi open handed. I must admit though, my wrist strap really serves no purpose as the bow does not tip forward after the shot, it just sort of stands straight up.

RE: Help with arrow flight...............
I saw on a post that some folks use there pinky finger to touch the stabilizer....to prevent torq...I tried it, because I too had a problem shooting to the right....it works for me.. I reach down with my pinky(after drawing), realax my grip, and steady the bow with the pinky. I have also changed my anchor...too make it more consistant....and here' s the bad news....I make an effort to close my eyes as the bow releases the arrow... I know this sounds bad but it keeps me from peeking. Since I' ve made these changes, I haven' t had a problem shooting to the right. Only problem I see with this is, I won' t be able to see where the arrow goes on the deer. I believe the arrow will go where I aim it....but if you can' t see it, I guess you don' t know. I don' t believe I could see the arrow in flight or as it hits, I couldn' t while shooting 3D.

RE: Help with arrow flight...............
I believe that the first shot of a practise session is sometimes the one that means the most.......its probably your most " natural" sight picture, draw, and release.....if its a 10 ringer, then every thing is cool. Bowdacious I think you did hit the nail on the head with his possible problem Ah Ha......the Bow sling or wrist strap isn' t to help you stabilize the bow.....its real function is just to keep you from shooting the BOW out of your hand.....I shoot with my hand completely open....no grip at all that way I don' t torque the bow. If your bow sling is too tight that maybe a problem that when fixed may help you shoot tighter groups! |
RE: Help with arrow flight...............
I think form has alot to do with the way a person shoots. Make sure your form is correct everytime and that will become second nature. Also, I find myself rushing my shot from time to time. If I slow down, and more importantly follow through with my shot, I shoot much better. Just a few thing to think about.

RE: Help with arrow flight...............
Other than that, you may be starting out with a different grip, and torqueing the bow. Try what I do - maybe you will focas more. I go outside - pickup one arrow and shoot - ONCE..... usually in the morning or right after work. It forces you to concentrate on THAT PARTICULAR SHOT, and not a group...... It really does work. Try it for a week.. You still want to do your normal practice but do it and wait an hour before you start your regular practice session or do it in the morning right before you leave for work.... If you are constantly hitting off your mark every time for a week - then as mentioned above you may be making adjustments to change your point of impact when perhaps your sight needs a minor adjustment..... Try it - remember one shot everymorning before work for a week..... and see what the results are - remember - ONLY ONE SHOT... just leave your bow ready to quickly grab - and ONE arrow (dont cheat) Ill be curious to see your results =) Tom |
RE: Help with arrow flight...............
Bowdacious, I realize the purpose of the wrist strap, but what I am saying is mine is real loose and even with a open grip my bow does not lunge forward, it just sort of stays in place. Maybe its the small grip of the hoyt that is keeping the bow from falling forward like all my other bows have always done. I think it must be torque. I know my sights don' t need adjusted, b/c I can hit a quarter at 20yds aiming directly at it, so I know I' m not adjusting for that.

Belle - Thats awesome , but ya need to do it on the first shot...... I had that problem once..... and doing the one shot thing made me realize I was changing my grio just enough to change impact. I was actually using more of a ' high grip' where the force of the bow was neared the area between my thumb andindex finger, Id relax and then let the bows handle rest on more my palm - at the wrist bone lower in my grip........ and it changed my impact..... |
RE: Help with arrow flight...............
Belle, I used to have that problem and narrowed it down to hand torque or punching the release. Since your already working on hand torque:
I mostly shoot to the right when I punch my release(even a little) ......and then almost subconsciously correct this and begin releasing better and get good shots afterwards. Working very hard on my release has helped me make the first shot count better than anything else! Good Luck !! |
RE: Help with arrow flight...............
Thanks for the suggestions guys, I' ll start working on them right away. Sorry if I sounded defensive in some of my posts, but this is really frustrating me. From 0-20yds, my first shot is fine, its when I stretch it to 25yds and out that I began to screw up. CBM makes a good point, I may be punching. I' ve never been able to hold my pins rock solid on my target, I have to play the " float" , which can cause severe punching. Can any of you hold dead steady on target from 25+yds?
