RE: who bow hunts from the ground?
i usually hunt from the ground if i am too tired to feel safe in a tree sometimes. Last season me and my cousin sat on buckets on the side of a feild and rattled a buck in to 20 yards in about 30 minutes of hunting. It didnt see me till i shot. :D

RE: who bow hunts from the ground?
I hunt from the ground - haven' t gotten around to putting up or fixing up a stand yet. The tree I would like to put a stand in was struck by lightning a couple of weeks ago. Actually the lightning mostly struck an old wooden stand in this tree and sent pieces of wood flying everywhere. This tree is a great old oak which has a fat trunk going up to about 12 feet and then spreading limbs in all the right places - no wonder they picked it before.
Anyway, back to your question. Last year was my first year bowhunting. I missed a buck early in the season - arrow went right under his belly as he was moving. I was set up on a milk crate in between a bunch of dead trees. The buck never saw me and I didn' t know at the time to make a sound to make him stop. Near the end of the season I took my doe. She was with two other does and a buck but the buck was too far away and leaving the scene quickly. The year before during the rifle season I got my doe from the ground also - same bunch of dead trees. During the off season I hunt with my camera. I almost always wear camo with a camo cap and nothing to hide my scent. I get darned close as long as the wind is right and they don' t spot my camera. I suggest to make sure that you have good camo, cover your face and head and look for good cover - dead trees, heavy brush, tall grass or ferns. And the biggest thing as I tell my ants-in-the-pants hubby " BE STILL" Oh, don' t forget to de-scent or use scent-lok clothing. Sorry for being long-winded...:) GOOD LUCK! |
RE: who bow hunts from the ground?
Over 30 years of Bow Hunting and most of it is from the ground. I have only shot one Deer and one Bear from a tree stand. I shoot atleast one Animal a year and sometimes both a Deer and Elk in one year. We are only allowed one of each a year over here in Idaho..

RE: who bow hunts from the ground?
I do but usually sit in thick fence lines, but I do make some home made camo material blinds. I use to pieces of wood,Like molding 4 foot long.Take camo material and fasten it to the sticks with electrical ties. You can just roll it up and it is light and only like 2 inches round for transport. This year due to health problems I will be sitting on a camo lawn tractor in fence lines or behind them blinds. I do have a permit from the state to hunt from a vehicle.

RE: who bow hunts from the ground?
I do 90-95% of my hunting from the ground, however I always use either a natural blind or make a natural blind. To me there is no bigger thrill than being eye level with a deer on thier home turf.

RE: who bow hunts from the ground?
I shot both of my 8 pointers last year from the ground.. First 8 was on a rub line and i was just sitting on the ground in a windfall.. second one was a make shift ground blind...up on a hill kinda lookin over a ravine where the deer come up to hit some apple orchards/fields..
So, YES.. I am succesful on the ground....If i had a scanner , i' d post the pics.. |
RE: who bow hunts from the ground?
I have hunted from a stand and on the ground with sucess both ways. If I go into an area that a good tree is not availabe I set up on the ground. I ussually try to tuck myself into some weeds for cover. This year I picked up an ameristep 3 panel turkey blind, just to give me a little more concealment so I can move my legs when they get cramped from sitting on the ground.
Good Luck |
RE: who bow hunts from the ground?
No, not without the use of a blind. I was busted too many times in the past. However, since picking up a blind I have found a new interest in hunting on the ground again. I would say that prior to that purchase I hunted out of a treestand 100% of the time. Since buying the blind I would say that it is now more like 70/30 in favor of the treestand. Most of the time the situation (terrain, weather, etc...) dictates where I will be hunting.
