Tree Stand Height

Might have some friends, family etc go out and sit in the treestand with me while I bowhunt.. Looking at some cheaper buddy stands.. Most of them are like 12 feet to the platform !! I have always hunted around 20 feet.. Do yall think 12 to the plat is to low to get deer right by you and not be in there field of view ???

HDMontana 08-12-2012 03:39 AM

I have always hunted higher but a lot of people have sucess at lower heights. Depends on how much background cover you have IMO.

Treebeard 08-12-2012 03:43 AM

Seems kind of low but depends on your cover vegetation and scent as got to be more of a concern. The friends that are tagging along do they hunt? Will they be able to sit really still being that low I would put them higher and me lower but it is just a opinion.
Keep us posted I am interested as I have a couple of people that want to tag along as well.
Good luck
Treebeard

Really, LOL!

HONKERS 08-12-2012 04:30 PM

Ill hunt in my stands from 12ft to 16 ft....you'll be fine in 12 ft stands..

invmp12 08-12-2012 06:50 PM

Big Game has a 16-17 ft buddy stand that is made really well. Own one myself, and it is very steady, heavy, but really steady. It takes a couple good men to put it up. I bought one of those stand buddy's that strap to the tree and crank it up, works awesome.

60 FEET WOW. What a shot angle. Thats crazy

BigCountryHunter 08-12-2012 07:30 PM

Treebeard, Im now sure if they will be able to sit still or not lol.. None of them have ever hunted before or even sat in a treestand but I think the reward of introducting someone new to hunting is better than the risk of them spooking deer.. I just wanted to have a halfway decent chance at harvesting something when they are with.. I was mostly going to take them on doe hunts but if a big buck comes in so be it.. lol.. I thought maybe a ground blind but would rather be in the air..

BigCountryHunter 08-12-2012 07:36 PM

Thanks to everyone that replied ... Lol 60 feet Lol .. I wouldnt wanna have to put together or hang or climb up in that stand or be in it on a windy day.. haha.. lol...

invmp12 I have seen thoses but dont they run around 200 or 300 bucks ??? I was lookin for something in the lower 100s range so I could get 2 or 3 of them to put in various locations..

see if its ok to build them in your area. i enjoy building some. all you will need is two 2 x 4's and some plywood + nails and a hammer.

BigCountryHunter 08-12-2012 10:41 PM

I have built some permanent platform stands when I was younger but I move around to much to use them now and alot of places I hunt you cant build them on.. Thanks for the info though

12 isoniazid the low side .I prefer to be at 20 -25 . Works best for me not to be spotted

Mibowhunter91 08-13-2012 10:23 AM

I think a blind would be pretty hard to beat with a new hunter they could get away with a lot more movement. You could always place the blind on a field edge so ur not loosing field of view due to under brush...but all that being said I started hunting with my dad out of a homemade 2 person stand it had a shooting rail around it that we zip tied camo burlap to it wasn't but 12 feet or so off the ground and seemed to work back then

iayotehunter 08-13-2012 10:42 AM

Idk why everyone thinks it's bad to sit lower in the tree, heck I bowhunted on the ground last year sitting in a folding camping chair. saw many deer, had a doe at 5 yards, Even killed a doe that way. I don't even use scent control products either and was never winded. As long as you minimize movement you'll be fine at any height.

I am taking my kids out just as I did during turkey and we are using one of the blinds... As for tree IMO 12 - 16 works for me because I have cover at those hieghts... It depends a lot on where your cover begins...

OhioNovice 08-13-2012 04:06 PM

I hunt from a two person stand I picked up at Dicks for $140. Its a ladder stand and its 20ft.

OhioNovice 08-13-2012 04:11 PM

Actually I lied. Thought it was 20ft but looks like its only 17ft to the bench. And the price went up in the past few years.

They sell tree stand skirts. They hide the lower half of your body when you are sitting down. They even sell tree stand blinds.

I have put a stand 10 ft in a tree before and killed a doe. I had plenty of branches and cover in the tree to hide me. If you can find a tree with low branches and maybe add this skirt to it you should be fine. And good luck introducing kids to hunting. Everybody should take a kid hunting at least once!

I like to be around 15ft or so.

Just watch your background and make sure you blend in.

Killed many deer just sitting on the ground also. My biggest buck was killed at 20 yrds and me sitting on a blow down.

Hunt the wind and let it dictate your spot for each hunt. To do otherwise is "pissin inda wind". 10ft, 20ft... 60ft  it don't matter when the wind is wrong!

I once DID hang a Loc-on gunstand 45-50ft up a large white oak. Birds were flyin BELOW me! But I was 20yrs younger, 50#s lighter and didn't have a good lookin woman and 3 kids waitin at home for me back in those days! :o Deer for sure had NO clue I was anywhere around, but just climbin up in that thing was an adventure. (Would NOT even consider such today. About all I leave the ground for today is a steel lader or a WELL BUILT shooting house!) The scent IS going to come down somewhere tho.

Deer hunting and wind is like your wife. Friend OR foe... just depends on how you play them!!!

Try looking up a Big Dog double stand. It may fit your bill. My brother in law and his daughter hunt from one of these, and I have used it as well. Lighter, but plenty sturdy.

Thanks for all the info and input that everyone gave me on this.. Really appericate it..
