fawn with antlers?
has any one heard of a fawn thats only like 5 monthes old now having antlers?????? because i swear i saw a fawn that had 4 points..... is this possible....it was by another fawn so i had something to compare it by with size...and it was small....i wouldn' t even think of shooting at it if it did or didn' t have antlers....but yeah tell me whatcha think! |
RE: fawn with antlers?
I' m no expert but I' d guess that a fawn that sprouts antlers in it' s first six months is probably carrying some great genetics! I would guess it would be an 8pt or 10pt at a year and a half[:o]

5 months old would have it being born in March or early April. Maybe last years fawn?

RE: fawn with antlers?
if it was last years fawn it is a runt....i think its an early born fawn from this year...it doesn' t have any spots but its tiny...so i don' t know...the area that i saw it in has great deer genetics.... theres a state park there where the deer can' t be taken and i' ve on numerous occations seen large bucks there...so thats what i thought about it.... |
RE: fawn with antlers?
I' d have to guess that it " could" happen. Heck stranger things have happened.
I' ve often wondered if this is possible. About 10 years ago, my brother in law shot a little 5pt that I could swear was a fawn. It was the size of our avg fawns (50lbs), had a short little face, a really small, weird rack, and acted like a fawn(ie: it didn' t run...he walked right up to it). I wish I would have checked the teeth...hindsight of course. Not sure if it' s possible, but who knows for sure. I have seen fawns where the buttons have grown out of the skin into little spikes (like an inch or so). Early born, I' m sure. |
RE: fawn with antlers?
Is it possible it was a 15-16 month old doe with antlers?
You said it didn' t have spots,so did the other one have spots? Was it in vevet or did it already have it rubbed off.A doe will not usually get rid of the velvet so if you see it late in the year and it still has velvet, then my quess would be it is a doe. I quess it is possible but the possibility of it being a doe is pretty strong. |
RE: fawn with antlers?
your right fox... i never thought of that..but i still think it was too small... to be that old... the other deer had lost its spots also...and here in minnesota by time a deers 1 1/2 years old they can wiegh 150+ pounds....so i really doubt it...the thing is if it was a doe then this would be the time for it to grow the antlers.... but does dont' ever lose their antlers....they' re permenant.....[:o] |
