My First Big Buck (big to me at least)
November 4th, 2011 at 6:03pm....
After a long week at the hunting camp I finaly nailed a beauty! 10 point Whitetail with the longest tines measuring in at 9 and 9.5 inches. From my treestand the shot was broadside at 32yrds. He only made it 15yrds before he "shovel-nosed". Called him in using a doe in estrus call. He was chasing a mama and her little one and moving away from me at about 45yrds. I had to call so loud I thought for sure I would have spooked the whole woods but instead it turned him around and made him bee-line straight towards my stand! He wound up on a trail that went to a couple scrapes I was hunting over and gave me a wide open 32yrd shot broadside! I didn't tape him but he is at the taxidermists. Any guesses at his score? Here's a couple pics either way: ![]() ![]() |
Congrats, nice looking buck!!!!!

No guess on the score, but a great looking buck. Sounds like a perfect shot too! Good job.

I'm not overly concerned about the score... I'm just happy that he will make a beautiful mount! The score question was more a curiosity.
As for the perfect shot... well, I used a 100 grain g5 tekan mechanical head and upon field dressing I found I had a direct heart shot! Not to sound like a salesman here but OMFG those tekans make a sick wound! The heart had a hole the size of my thumb! I so cannot wait for my mount to be finished! I look at my pics daily, probabley on an hourly basis on my cell phone lol |
Awesome buck, congrats!
|
id say around 130 to 135..great buck!
|
Very nice buck. Congrats.
|
Nice deer !!!! congrats
|
thats a great buck..congrats
|
Great Buck!!! i love those narrow tall racks. I would guess him to be about 135.
And i agree with those tekans, I love them! |
Nice!
ANY buck you get with your bow, is a GOOD buck. But that one, is a beautiful animal! Cherish that one, because there is a very good chance you may not "see" a better one, let alone GET a better one, using a gun or a bow. Again, congratulations, very nice deer!:cool2:

Congratulations,he is a nice one for sure. He is a wall hanger if you can afford it,great job bringing home the meat.

Thanks for all the kind responses! I sure hope I get the chance to see at least an equivelent sized buck in the future! The camp I hunt usually has at least 2 nice 8 pointers seen each season. This year I saw a nice chocolate brown racked 8 and a decent shooter snow white racked 8. Hope they make it through gun season to get a chance next year at one. The white horned one is absolutley perfect in symetry. Italy Valley in NY sure produces some beauties... 20 yrs of hunting there and each year at least one slob that I know of gets harvested by one of the surrounding landowners. All I can say is I'm tickled pink at the results of my efforts this season and can't wait to get back out there next season!
This one is at the taxidermists... about broke my bank account but hey its a memory I will cherish forever! |
that's a great buck in my book, congrats!

Great looking Archery Buck, from what I've heard (at least here in Missouri) an Archery Buck doesn't have to be as Big as a Rifle/Muzzle Loader Buck to get into the record books?
I'm surprised Your Taxidermist couldn't give a close estimate on what Your Buck may score...they usually deal with it on a daily basis?A lot goes into figuring out how much a Buck will score...length,thickness,uniformity,width between the antlers and so on,plus there's a "Green Score" when first harvested and a 60 day drying period before the final Official real score is figured, not to mention if its a Typical or Non-Typical rack....Ok enough BS,my final answer is around 110 to 125 score? :hail: :happy0001:  |
Congrats on the nice buck!!! My scoring guess will have to be 130-135. Pretty good mass on that guy too. Should look good on the wall!
|
Nice buck. Congrats on your harvest.

By the way Brian... I just checked out you knives/website. Wow! Looks like some good chit! Once my wallet stops yelling at me from the cost of my mount I might be gettin in touch with ya! Have u ever worked with antler for the handles? I've got a few tiny racks from my youth that id possibley be interested in using for some smaller pearing style knives!
|
thanks man! I dont use any horn material. Best way to get one from me is snagg one at Atlanta Blade Show or one leftover from show. Im so backed up with orders its hard to fit in new ones but holla at me.....you never know!! I can fit in some here and there best I can anyways :)
I can only hope for a buck like that one man! |
Hey Brian...
To my surprise they still make the call! Here's a link for you! https://shop.primos.com/pc-539-9-power-buck-doe.aspx I had it on the "EB" setting that day. Im actually glad you asked because now that I looked it over on the primos site, I see I have "under utilized" this call! Didn't realize you could set it to 2 calls in one! Read the "View instructions and product packaging" link under the picture of it on their website. I cannot believe I over looked this from day 1! The "second" reed inside the flexible portion, I just now for the first time looked at it... it was set to DG but that part isn't used unless you inhale which I never did lol. Always just blew in it like a traditional call tube! Now I have to see how the "combo" works on this thing! |
Very cool! I have a few calls but this looks like a decent do all. Thanks for the link!
|
Nice work! Congrats!!! I got my first bow buck this year too 3 days after yours...
|

Thanks again everyone... I have found this website very welcoming to it's newest members and to be frank, the atmosphere here sure beats some of the other sites I frequent! huntingnet.com is a permanent link now on my Favs Bar in the Browser! |
