Thought I had a decent sized doe but..

Went and scouted some new lands today got set up at 4 pm this deer came in at about 20 yards looked like a good sized doe but it turned out to be a button buck guess he had something wrong cause he should of at least had some spikes, the land im hunting is beautiful scenery.

blackhawk_archery 10-29-2011 05:59 PM

was hunting in that brush pile, gave him a heart shot he ran 50 yards and tipped over.

blackhawk_archery 10-29-2011 06:02 PM

anyone have any ideas on that field is that barley you imagine?

tight360 10-29-2011 06:02 PM

Something wrong?

Not in my neck of the woods. Button bucks are button bucks (born in June). And spikes are spikes usually 1.5. Now about 10 years ago I shot a 3 point, but he was aged at 8.5 years old. I knew it before I shot him though, been on my property his entire life, he used to be a respectable 8 point, just couldn't get a shot during legal light. Molars were wore down to darn near nuth'n.

blackhawk_archery 10-29-2011 06:08 PM

Yeah thats what im saying is he wasnt born this year.Havent seen an 8 year old maybe someday.

Ha yeah its some type of golden weed with seeds on top never seen it before.

blackhawk_archery 10-30-2011 08:55 PM

whats got me is how the heck is that treestand cable going in the ear i sure as heck didn't put it thru there and there is no holes in that ear.

UncleNorby 10-31-2011 03:29 AM

Looks like a fawn buck to me, not too much bigger than the stand platform. What did it weigh? Any way, some good eating.

blackhawk_archery 10-31-2011 07:06 AM

it would be a fawn on roids

janesburg 10-31-2011 04:53 PM

Thats a fawn and fawns don't grow spikes just nubs. Congrats on the deer though!

blackhawk_archery 10-31-2011 09:26 PM

Thanks but its over a year old it was 124 pounds ive seen enough yearlings to know its just hard to see in the pic.

blackhawk_archery 10-31-2011 09:29 PM

if he is a fawn he pry woulda been 300 pounds by age 3 he was built like crazy.

UncleNorby 11-01-2011 02:16 AM

I can't believe it was a fawn if it weighed 124 (field dressed weight). Even a very early drop wouldn't weigh that much dressed. The pic is deceiving, and a pierced ear to boot. Strange.

blackhawk_archery 11-01-2011 08:12 AM

ill never figure that ear out

Bible_Man 11-01-2011 12:07 PM

I don't see how it's possible for that deer to weigh 124 lbs. What are the dimensions on your stand platform? Judging from the bed of your truck, it looks like a 55-60 lb fawn. Early dropped fawns could be that large, or larger, and it looks like a fawn to me...of course I ain't touching it so it's hard to be certain. Either way, oughta be mighty tasty!

jeepinxj 11-01-2011 04:28 PM

That is a Fawn, best eating for sure.

blackhawk_archery 11-01-2011 04:47 PM

i dont know its possible i will way the meat when i get it back and see what it comes out to.

jlakes 12-18-2011 12:33 PM

Yea that's a fawn from where I come from.

NebBuckHunter 12-18-2011 09:05 PM

Here in Nebraska it's a fawn for sure. Id be surprised if once you weigh your butchered meat if you have more than 30 lbs.

GMMAT 12-19-2011 02:12 AM

To the OP, you do know a BB....IS a buck fawn...right?

Looking at the photo, I'm not so sure the OP isn't "kinda" right, though. That doesn't look like a buck fawn to me. His head's too long and his body's too long.

I've seen bucks lose one of thei antlers in velvet or later. I'm sure there's a possibility this one had spikes (or whatever a spindly 1.5yo would carry) and lost them @ the pedicle.

jddeadeye 12-21-2011 07:28 AM

looks like a tasty fawn to me. Thats what wi fawns look like anyway.

Pa Trophy Man 12-21-2011 08:19 AM

No way that deer is anywhere close to 124lbs. That looks just like every other fawn around my neck of the woods.

halfbakedi420 12-21-2011 08:31 AM

looks like a fawn to me...maybe the skin was rubbed raw on the one "antler" but the other is skinned over like a button.
work yer way up.
30lbs? i doubt it

jag-mag 12-23-2011 04:07 PM

Short pointed nose, small head and ears, fawn.

CVG Ohio 12-23-2011 04:18 PM

Is there anything dangling between the hind legs? If not it is a Fawn, if so it is a Buck. Simple. :)

WNYhunter 12-24-2011 02:24 AM

bb fawn all the way. easy to make that mistake. he will eat well.

SecondChance 12-25-2011 02:39 PM

From here a BB is a buck no matter what you call it if it has a "dangly thingy"!!!!!!
And being in Il as well, it is a fawn from all the others I have ever seen here. Regardless, he will make good eatn no matter.
Hey BHA, just look at the tag you get back from the processor and it will say how many total pounds of meat you took in. Let us know.
