Frayed/cut strand?

My string is in really good shape except for ONE strand is pretty severely frayed/cut about 1/2" above my peep. No idea how it happened.

It's on an older bow that I'm looking to replace next season, so I don't want to dump the $150 on it to get re-strung.

I'm thinking about trimming back the frays up to my peep serving and just going with it, but is losing ONE strand going to be dangerous? The rest of the strands are tip top with almost NO fraying, and it's probably only been shot 150ish arrows on this string.

So is it unsafe to keep using it with a cut strand?

I would probably take it to the local archery shop and have them check it out. Exploding limbs can be dangerous.

from the sounds of it you should be all set. one strand isnt going to hurt you for a few shots during the hunting season. most bows with cable guards have broken strands and people dont even know it. I would say shoot it. we are running a $55tyd string set special this month if you decide to go with another set and would like to know more shoot me a PM.

You might be able to get by for a while, depending on the setup. Remember, most single color strings are just one strand, in the first place. If yours is one with minimal serving, it won't last long but, if it is one with a ton of serving holding things in place, you might not notice the difference for a while.

If you do decide to "doctor" the string, at least have the courtesy to tell whoever you sell the bow to that it will need a new one.

Update:

Being cautious about it, I took the bow to my local bow shop yesterday. The two bow techs there said it wouldn't be a problem with one cut strand. They unserved my peep, pulled the cut strand back to the nock serving on one side and to the cam serving on the other, and cut off the loose ends. Their point was that a 2 color string has 4 ends under the servings, so now my 1 color string does too.

I made a few phone calls to other bow techs around the state, they all said the same thing. "We'll re-string it for you if you want, but it happens all the time, we just cut them off at the servings".
