How old is your bow?

Mathews SQ2 purchased in 2001, still going strong.

I'm having a hard time justifying a new bow purchase considering my SQ2 still does everything I ask of it.
That and new bow prices are crazy high.

I did recently purchase a new cam, but the total after set up was still a fraction of a new bow price.

So how often do you folks upgrade your stick & string?

What would make you upgrade?
Me, it would probably take a catastrophic failure for me to upgrade.

superrman77 08-15-2011 06:53 PM

Funny you posted this. I have a High Country 4-Runner. It is about the same age as yours. I have been debating getting a new one but this on shoots pretty good.

salukipv1 08-15-2011 07:16 PM

Matthews Drenalin, bought when it first came out, I figure it's about 4 years old? Not really sure. I see almost no reason to replace it yet. It was a big improvement over my previous bow, but I don't see much out there now that's that much better than the Dren.

Terasec 08-15-2011 07:43 PM

My browning tornado is going on on 15 yrs old on original strings.
Recently had my bow shop check it out and even they said strings are fine, now plans on changing anytime soon

sdhunter11 08-15-2011 07:59 PM

2007 mathews switchback xt left hand, way too many memories with this bow to get rid of it and i can still stack arrows with it so why get a new one.

bama man 08-15-2011 08:13 PM

bowtech admiral '09. pretty quick (281), silent, and smooth! not planning to change anytime soon.

nchawkeye 08-15-2011 08:24 PM

Well....I started in the late 60s with a recurve...Bought a Bear Whitetail in 1975 used this bow until 94-95 and bought a used Mountaineer...I'm still using it... :)

I shoot fingers and frankly there just aren't many good finger bows left so I'm keeping her until she or I wear out...

pa_yote_hunter 08-15-2011 08:48 PM

2005 Bowtech Allegiance still going strong....

Jr_Buck_Hunter 08-15-2011 08:58 PM

Last Summer Got a Bear Apprentice, But its getting to small for me, Might need to get the Bear Charge or Home Wrecker soon :D

BGfisher 08-16-2011 05:59 AM

2005 Martin ShadowCat Magnum
2010 Rytera Alien Z
2011 Rytera Nemisis

The Alien Z is my favorite. That one sees 150-200 shots a week. All set to 47#.

doetrain 08-16-2011 06:09 AM

I have a Matthews FX new in 2004 when my Nephew bought,he upgraded and passed it on to me for a good price. I really like the way it look feels and shoots for me,so as long as it can drop deer I'll keep it.

TURKEY FAN 08-16-2011 07:16 AM

I had an HCA Brute Force just prior to my SQ2.
Great shooting bow, but the grip was just too wide for my comfort.
I never really could get accustomed to it.

your right, all new compound are horrible for shooting fingers. my dad still shoots his jennings compound from the 80's with fingers...

i shoot a bear charge. but i just got a Bear Kodiak Hunter Recurve, i love the simplicity of it! i think thats what makes it so fun for me. i'll try and take a deer with it this year.

sconnyhunter 08-16-2011 05:36 PM

I still shoot the PSE Spirit? that I have had since I was in (Junior high maybe). It must be nearly 18yrs old now.

PastorJim08 08-17-2011 12:45 AM

My bow is a 2yr old Bowtech Captain. I got it from a guy who had had it for only 6 months. Prior to that I had a Hoyt Oasis that was 12yrs old. I personally love those guys that have to have a new bow every year. Gives me an opportunity to get an almost new bow for alot less than brand new. When I bought my six month old Captain, I paid about half of what it would cost new.

Blessings......Pastorjim

Bible_Man 08-17-2011 08:00 AM

2006 Mathews Outback...just put new strings on her. Flinging 462 grain arrows at 265-270 fps...that oughta do.

minnesotadeer 08-17-2011 08:26 AM

I had a 6 year old Parker Buckhunter until Monday when I traded her in that evening for a new Diamond Outlaw. I didn't need to but was hankering for something a little newer and faster. The Parker helped me slay 8 deer and was a good bow. I got a third of what I originally paid for it on the trade in so I thought that was a good value. Frankly, I'm hoping this Outlaw lasts me longer than six years, or rather I don't want anything "nicer" before then as I really like it.

davec921 08-17-2011 09:21 AM

I put new one each year being this is my first year an my first bow.
I just bought a readhead Kronick.
So far I love it. I have had a few problems at first. The rubber tube on the peep broke twice. An while that was getting fixed the guy at the shop noticed I was lowering my head to see out of it. He then moved it up. But when he did that the peep was to small.

I then went to a string splitter. Its basically an upside down V.
That is working great so far. I can still see all of my sight an have a constant sight picture. Im not leaning my head down either.
Not sure how much hunting Ill get to do this year bot hope to get at least one deer.
later
DAVE

kallinfool 08-17-2011 09:28 AM

I had my Parker Huntermag for 5yrs before some *&%,^%#@,#&^*(# stole it out of my shed. Looked into a new one and finally settled one the Omen Pro from PSE. Super fast and smooth!!! Cant wait to take it out in 2wks and lean it up against a downed bull!! Think if my old one was still here with daddy, I would hav been toting it in the woods. Ha!! Happy huntin!!

IL-Cornfed 08-17-2011 10:10 AM

A new bow rig each season is a large part of the excitement for me every year. However, I realize that I probably shoot a LOT more than the average guy that just blows the dust off his bow about a week before his season starts. LOL!

marquismarc 08-18-2011 04:00 AM

I have an 08 Diamond Marquis that I love, I have thought about switching to the Bowtech Destroyer 350 but my local archery shop had a falling out with Bowtech and no longer carries their product line, now my options are hoyt, mathews, martin, and g5 bows....none of which I am really interested in right now, so I have just been hanging on to the old Diamond.

jnrbronc 08-18-2011 05:44 AM

Just had my 2004 Mathews Legacy restrung, bought it used in 2006. Maybe I'll buy a two year old bow next year, but the current one has done everything I have asked of it. I'm headed out of state soon on an archery elk hunt (thus put a new string on earlier this year). A friend loaned me his Bowtech General as a back up bow to take along. I've shot it, sure is dead in the hand, so might look at a used one for my next bow. Probably try to shoot many models before deciding.

solobowhunter 08-19-2011 08:15 AM

Mathews Legacy bought in 2003 I believe. Thought hard about trading but when it comes crunch time I just cant. Shoots too true. Much like the brand new bows I test shot... so why trade?

dpv 08-19-2011 03:59 PM

Horton Steelforce purchased in August 2002. Paid 125 new, delivered. Still kills deer so I'm standing pat with it.

onion721 08-19-2011 05:15 PM

Wow so how do bow manufacturers make any money?
Profit margin that great per bow?

Granted this is a small sample.

SecondChance 08-19-2011 05:16 PM

Just traded off my Mathews Q2 and a NIB Parker Pioneer XP for a Mathews Drenalin last week. I had the Q2 for 9yrs. Its been to Africa, Canada and half the US for various critters. Too many taken to count or want to dress out again!!!

bamahntr 08-19-2011 07:00 PM

Mathews sbxt 06...Still shooting great!! I shoot the new bows every year but all I see different is a few more fps and a lot more $$$$. I shoot this bow almost every day and have had zero problems with it, may be a while before next bow, if ever!

Murdy 08-21-2011 05:41 AM

'06 Hoyt Trykon. Plan on having it for a while yet.

Hunterbrum 08-21-2011 08:06 AM

I have a Mathews Z7 that I got last off-season. Before last year I had a 12 year old MQ1.

treestandsnyper 08-21-2011 11:57 AM

I buy on average about 3 new bows each season. This year I've owned a Maitland Retribution, Bowtech D350, Strother Vanquish and now I have an Elite Hunter.

brunsc 08-21-2011 06:25 PM

Had my bear lights out for 3 years nd love it ill prlly trade it in for a new bear in about 3 to 4 years!! Never shoot anything other than bear!

No doubt this is certainly not a good example! LOL!

On large forums like AT the folks that buy new rigs each season is FAR larger.... in fact, many buy multiple rig each and every season. I'm fortunate to enjoy hunting and especially 3D shooting with dozens upon dozens of archers each season and most trade off each year. In fact, I'm not sure if one of my huntin' buddies has shot the same bow for more than 2 season no matter how much he thought he liked the rig. LOL! Shooting the same bow for a decade like some on this forum is NOT the norm for sure. LOL! As I've mentioned, new bows are actually a large part of the excitement of the sport each season.... it's something we all look forward to. In fact, most of my friends are already buzzing about all the new 2012 line-ups we will get to see in Oct/Nov ?!?

barry waz up

hey barry didnt know u polked around here , glad to see u , have a great day :fighting0007:

Whackadeer 08-22-2011 07:51 PM

2001 Martin Cougar Magnum. Shoots great. New bows way too pricy and can't see how one would shoot any better.

Rick C. 08-23-2011 06:33 AM

bought a PSE Stingray about 5 years ago used, my guess is vintage 2002 - 2003. Not a bad bow, just broke one of the limbs, trying to find a replacement limb now. Hopefully I can keep using it this year.

... Well, no luck with finding parts, so my bow is brand new this year, Mission Venture.

sammyh312 08-23-2011 11:43 PM

Three or four year old Parker Ultra-Lite. LOVE it, and nothing better from a pop-up. But...i am getting a new Bear Carnage camo in the next teo to three months, and cant wait!!!
