Going on my first elk hunt with bow and trying to determine what to use is tough these arnt whitetail and my mechanicals can stay home!

WOULD LOVE TO KNOW THE FOLLOWING FORM YOU GUYS WHO DO IT MORE THAN ME!!

Arrow and lenght?

lbs shooting?

Broadhead and weight?

Total arrow weight with broadhead?

number of kills? love to hear about any of the " WISH I HAD NOT DONT THAT" " because I got a big list of those to help any whitetail hunters!!

What are you shooting now? I' d be willing to bet that your set up is just fine. Just use a good fixed blade head.

I' m using a Parker UL35 @ 70 pounds
30" GT 75-95 arrows with either 100 or 125 grain Muzzies. Still deciding which heads to use.
Total arrow weight is 430 to 455 grains depend on head weight. Probably going with 125' s

My big " wish I hadn' t done that" was use a mechanical head last year. It wasn' t the only factor, as a few things happend at exactly the " wrong" time, but I believe it certainly contributed to not finding a very large bull last year. I' ll never use a mechanical on elk again.

I don`t elk hunt but I do moose hunt and any equipement I use would be more than enough for elk. Mathews Q2XL at 70lbs, xx78 2219 at 29" with 125 gr Thunderheads. This set-up will give complete passthroughs on moose.

arrow weight with 100 grain spitfire 406 GR.

Broadhead used 100 gr spitfires last year and killed two whitetail one P and Y. Great accuracy but not that great on pentration, neither touch the otherside and both deer were dead inisde 100 yds. Worried and what might happen on the bad shot has me knowing I will go to a fixed bladeI jsut don' t know whic one.

I have liked the NAP RAZORBAK (especailly the way they rotate) and the Phantom by Muzzy, lastly I will test the Muzzy three blade for I have heard lots of good things. I really hoping I can learn enough here to cut downthe test $$ I have to spend!

The thing I am most curious to learn is the total weight set-up that you expereinced guys are using!! THanks again

Have Elk, Caribou, Black Bear & many Whitetails & Mule Deer with following set up. Also, Wild Hogs that are the toughest of anything to kill. I must be near 150 bowkills in 45 years of Bowhunting.
60# Compound, 29" 2216 Aluminum with Rocky Mountain 3 blade Razor 125 grain.
If it is in the chest, it exits the other side.
I am headed for Wild hogs again this weekend & the Rocky Mountains are ready-been using them since they came out in the 70s & have seen NO reason to change.

I' ll be leaving in 3 1/2 weeks for my elk hunt. I' ll be using Gold Tips with 100 grain 3 blade Muzzys, total weight of 400 grains, shot at 265 fps. This setup will be more than enough for elk. My last elk was taken with a 48 lb recurve, with no problems. Hit ' em where you' re supposed to, and you' ll have no problems with any fixed blade shot from an average hunting setup.

Straightarrow how will I know you if I run into you? ;) It looks like you and I will be going at the same time. [:o] Without giving away any privileged information, what general location do you hunt?

420-500 grain (I haven' t decided for sure yet this year) 28 1/2 " Carbon Express arrow, tipped with a G5 montec broadhead, out of a 70 lb bow.

To the items below, I just added the Limbsavers Quiver insert and my bow barely whispers. I only have and shoot one bow for the game animals I hunt; Elk, Mule and Whitetailed deer, bear, and cougar.

Besides being a decent caller, setup is one of the most important things that' s neglected. Most newcomers hide themselves to good, therefore miss oportunities at shots at an elk as they come in. On the other hand they move around to much and are spotted by elk usually without even knowing it, they think the elk lost interest and that' s why they left. Once setup, be patient, elk sometimes take their sweet time coming in very quietly, always be on high alert, even after 20 mins.

Definately look into the Muzzy 4-Blades.....I' ve taken 4 bulls and a cow along with several big muleys and have never had one not pass through......They fly great and they make really good holes.......

The biggest thing I can advice you on is don' t hide BEHIND something when you' re calling, hide in FRONT......You' ll see what I mean......Also prepare yourself for the worst case of " buck" fever you' ve ever imagined.....My first bull encounter left me unable to walk for about 10 minutes due to an AMAZING adrenaline rush:D......

I shoot a Pearson Spoiler at 78lbs.

I shoot 30" 2216' s with a Wasp Camloc tip.

Not sure of the arrow weight, I' m not a techie. I just know they shoot great. I tune with paper, etc, but never used scales. I' ve been shooting 35 years, since I was 6. I shoot barebow and fingers, instinctive.

I' ve taken 18 elk in the last 18 years. Several have been pass throughs and all my shots have been under 40 yrds.

I think the biggest mistake made is thinking that there are just no elk in the country. No bugling(you wouldn' t believe how close a bull could be without you hearing there bugle. Just a small ridge and a breeze makes a big difference), no new sign, etc. So they basically quit hunting hard and give up. Of course you want to be in an area that shows lots of sign, butthese are big animals and they cover alot of country fast. Never say never. What was arren yesterday could be filled with bugles tomorrow. I can' t tell you how many of our bulls are taken on the last day, the last hour.......my wife says that I do it on purpose. And you know what, she' s right. I don' t quit.

Shot my 6X5 bull with a Hoyt Tenacity set at 70 lbs., Beman Trophy Hunters 70-90' s with outserts and 100 grain Muzzy 3 blade broadheads. Currently shooting the Hoyt Vortec at 68lbs, Easton ACC' s and RM Snypers. I would simply change to Muzzy' s be mighty fine.

would love to know if you a 410 grain TOTAL(ACC KINETIC) with 100 grain MONTEC G5 is enough out on my Legacy at 68LBs?


AM I TOO LIGHT I would rather be flat and accurate than heavier and unsure! AM I WRONG?

I have yet to draw an Elk license but my buddy from Wyoming uses a Mathews Legacy set at 68 pounds and shoots uncut goldtip shafts, feathers with as much helical as he can get, a fall away rest, and three blade 125 grain Thunder heads. He is 6' 5" tall and has a really long draw. Uses this same set up for Mule Deer and Antelope and has taken several of all species with it.

Good luck on your hunt. I' m jealous! Maybe I' ll draw next year.:(
