Whats your comfort Zone.

I was wondering when that big buck walks in and you have your bow in hand. How close do you want him before you shoot. I heard some guys say less that 30 yards and some say less than 70 yards. I wanted to see what you zone was. Mine is less than 40 yards.

Terasec 02-04-2011 05:51 AM

less than 30 yds for me,
yes i can get good groupings at 50 yds,
but wouldnt risk it on a live target,

MeanV2 02-04-2011 07:08 AM

Mine at this stage of the game is 40 yards. It used to farther when the eyes were better ;)

There are times when a 20 yard shot is a No go! and there are times when a 40 yard shot is a slam dunk!

The most important thing is to learn the difference ;)

Dan

Dano879 02-04-2011 07:36 AM

yea i mean ive seen guys on hunting shows shoot at like 70 yards thats crazy i think. to much room for mistakes there

Schultzy 02-04-2011 08:27 AM

Preferably 12 yards. Other then that 20 yards and under.

SHED HUNTER 365 02-04-2011 08:58 AM

Depends on area I am hunting, but usually 30 yards and in.

Rhody Hunter 02-04-2011 01:04 PM

out to 40 but most of my shots are at 20-25

BigDaddy12t 02-04-2011 03:07 PM

25 yards or closer for me.

tight360 02-04-2011 07:56 PM

No choice.....

I'm so thick, I couldn't get a shot out farther than 25-30 yards due to the thickness of veg surrounding me. I choose these spots (or they choose me), after scouting. Thats where they're at (bucks).

AR Bowhunter 02-05-2011 04:00 AM

My sweet spot is 25 yards or less. I did mess up on a shot this year on a nine point at 25 yards. This was him at that moment. Its hard to see all nine but they are there.

Krypt Keeper 02-05-2011 05:45 AM

30 yards.. where I hunt even with a muzzleloader you will be lucky to get a clear shot at anything at 40 and past.

maynerrd 02-09-2011 02:46 PM

As close as they will get

bowhunterd68 02-09-2011 03:17 PM

Maynerrd, I agree with you, the closer the better. I've shot 15 with my bow, anywhere between 3 & 20 yards. I like them close.
Dan.

SwampCollie 02-10-2011 04:41 AM

Ideally between 7 and 18 yards... thats how close I want them. How close/far I can and will kill one is a different matter. I want to kill them in tight.... I want to see the whiskers on his nose and the cedar peelings on his bases. This is the whole reason I bowhunt.... getting in tight.

That said... I'm not going to let a big deer come within 40 of me and not shoot if I am comfortable with the shot and he presents a good opportunity. There are days I am confident at 50yards and days I don't feel like I could hit the ground from 30 yards... just depends on how I feel.

Wazz13 02-10-2011 05:02 AM

40 yards and in for me. I practice alot @ 50-70 yds, and that makes the 40 yd shot easier.

bigcountryextreme 02-10-2011 07:17 AM

I have killed between 8-65 yards with a compound. And have killed between 10-28 yards with recurve.

There is no right answer. It really just depends.

gregrn43 02-11-2011 05:54 AM

I like my shot 30 yards and under, thats not to say if one steps out at 40 I wouldnt take it. I practice out to 40 yards and i am comfortable with that shot. I just like them closer.

halfbakedi420 02-11-2011 06:01 AM

nothin cooler than havin a deer 8 feet from ya, but i have taken the 40 yarder b4...
my buddy likes to take long shots, he still hasnt hit anything!!

Dano879 02-18-2011 05:38 AM

yea i agree its nice to see nature up close. Thats why i bow hunt. But i was just seeing if i was crazy only takeing a 40 yard shot but sounds like im not to nutz after all.

48.75 yards,an inch further and it walks.:s12:

Ok,maybe not.I will say it will be what I am confident will end up with a killing shot at the time.

SecondChance 02-20-2011 06:48 PM

As close as I can let it get and it remain at ease and not spooked. If I can get it under 25 thats great.
I will take 40 without concern for I practice that range very regularly, but not my top choice for a shot.

kilotanker19 02-20-2011 07:40 PM

i like to stay less than thirty yards
more than that my groups wander

BigJ71 02-21-2011 09:49 AM

40yds and under....

VA5326 02-21-2011 06:42 PM

I like anything 30 and in. I can do 35-40 but most of the time I find that if you have an opportunity to shoot them at 40 chances are you will at 30 as well. Patience,.... let him come in.

ryndisher 02-21-2011 07:27 PM

Comfort zone is 60 and under not saying i would shoot that far but i could. Anything under 40 is ideal.

twildasin 02-23-2011 01:47 PM

Depends on the the stand I am hunting... With that said I got the green light out to 60 yards!!

matt068 02-24-2011 02:04 PM

My comfort zone is when i put my site on the animal and all pins are in the kill zone, Thats in a perfect world, 30 and under. I shot a buck at 4 yds when i was 15yrs old and believe it or not almost missed ( I was on the ground) and shakin a bit

bronko22000 02-24-2011 03:25 PM

I'd also have to say 25 yds. I practice out to 60 but like to get em in close. But sometimes they get in too close and have to wait til they pass. I would much prefer 15 - 20 yds and be at full draw when they get there and offer me a good shot angle.

3tail 02-24-2011 03:40 PM

30 yards and under for me .

PY Antlers 02-28-2011 09:07 AM

Like a lot of others said, there are a lot of variables, but I prefer 10-25 yards, but I will go out to 35 if its clear.
