I have been seeing huge cat tracks for the last few years. Now i got a pic of a mountain lion with my game cam. I have always hunted from the ground in that area. Now im afraid i might become dinner!

There are more mountain lions every year where we bowhunt in southern Arizona...definitely has my attention. I was recently reading my new issue of Sports Afield and they mention a new book out...&quot;Cougar Attacks:Encounters of the Worst Kind&quot;...by Kathy Etling...The Lyons Press (212)620-9580
I think I'll look into getting a copy.Hope this helps.

about 6 or 7 years ago it was opening day of elk bowseason aug.30 and i headed on out hunting in the afternoon. i walked the 2 miles down a tank trapped road to where the elk live and begain to cow call it was only 5 minutes and i was talkin with some elk 100 yards below the road . then i heard a brach snap above the road and figured it was more elk. well out came a 200 lbs cat. he just sat there and stared at me. i did the appropriate yelling and standing waiving my bow but no luck . then he moved to about 30 yards and sat back down. i was scared to death.i laid out 3 arrows and 2 knives all around me. i then picked up a small stick and threw it at him , it landed 10 feet or so away from him. and he dropped down 2 inches of the ground and came at me. as he came off the highbank of the road i shot . it was a lucky shot but i hit him right through the back, he jumped 6 feet in the air and did about 2 360s and ran down the road. well i was still shaking and i ran down the road the opposite way to my truck and headed home. once home some freinds talked me into going back and we found him 15 feet up a tree with my arrow still in him. i didnt hunt for 2 weeks after that and it took 2 or 3 years before i would bowhunt without my 44. all i can say is be carefull i know i called mine right too me. and they all have a mind of there very own. dont turn your back on one if you see it.

I've heard that pepper spray works but have been lucky enough not to find out first hand.

Keep an eye on overheads and backtrails. If you confront one, don't turn your back or run. Speak loudly. They usually won't confront a full grown man, but here in California where they took the right to hunt them away from us, I've caught young toms stalking me. We are really developing a big problem here with cats being sighted in residential areas and I think the cats are filtering into other states too. It doesn't take much to get them to leave, but I gotta agree, when you're out there in the dark, it can get real spooky sometimes, especially if you've encountered or seen one close by.

Nidahoscott I had almost the same thing happen in Utah ,I didn't have to kill it but it as close . Standing up and waving had no effect at all .Don't ever turn your back and if your calling you sound just like dinner .

Does your state frown on carrying a pistol for protection only?

Nice choice of sidearm Hillhntr. I carry the compact version, but not while I'm bowhunting - illegal here in MN

Yeah, illegal to carry a firearm while bowhunting in deer season here too. Off deer season I carry a sidearm. Especially while huntin pigs.

The best protection is someone smaller than you walking behind and in front of you.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> If I lived in cat country I think I'd carry a sidearm of some kind. Plus, I don't think I'd wait for one to charge. When he crouches down he's catching an arrow, a bullet or two, a couple knives and an assortment of rocks and stick.

here in idaho it is legal to carry any gun into the feild any time of year if you have a valid hunting license. even if your only huntin coyotees, i carry my 44 because bear season is just about the same as bow season

I would carry a 5 inch 45 colt ruger redhawk. No single action for me. Keep it double action. stoke it with some nice 250 or 300gr xtp to about 1200fps and go hunting.

Sounds awesome.I have 3 cats in my area, but now the snow has melted. Harder to track,I try to find the deer and or elk, set-up a tree stand and use a deer bleat or varmit call. I hunt alone use a bow with a sidearm, just in case. I personally love the thrill and i am not afraid. I don&quot;t hunt on the ground by myself. If u do have a partner sit back to back. And call. Use your eyes and ears, no movements, and above all be alert. Hope this helps And good luck..

On the bottomland farm I hunt, the owner says there are panther/puma or whatever he wants to call them. I haven't seen them, but I was packing up after dark and I heard one do his growl and almost soiled myself. I wouldn't expect them around here, but what I heard was no housecat, but I'm not sure what a bobcat sounds like, could have been that. The owner swears there are what he calls panthers on the land and sidearms are illegal during archery only season.

The most important bloodtrail leads right to the foot of the cross

&quot; The law says no sidearms during season.&quot; I'm sure! What does the law say when you're gettin ate by a mountain lion? Do not fight back? Of course not. Were it me, I'd be takin the ol glock 22 with me for such incidents.
