BOWHUNTER818 11-18-2010 03:27 PM

Yeah beat me too it, i would say 2 1/2 -3 year old deer..

Rhody Hunter 11-18-2010 04:30 PM

yea 2 1/ 2 year old , that is from a young deer not much wear

farm hunter 11-18-2010 07:25 PM

3-1/2 but not older. Last molar back - slope is consistent with 3.5

bump to top

pjarrows 11-24-2010 04:56 AM

I am going with 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 at best

halfbakedi420 12-04-2010 07:09 AM

isn't there an expert fer this on the site.

BTBowhunter 12-08-2010 04:22 AM

First of all,Congrats on a fine buck!!!

Even experts have a tough time aging by teeth. It's still a very inexact science.

The teeth are still relatively sharp. The sharpness or worn edges is far more telling than a lot of exposed dentin. I'd age this guy at 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 at best. The deers diet and the type of soil in the area can cause wide variances in tooth wear

Mass is the most telling indicator of age in the antlers (even less reliable though) and his mass makes me lean toward 2 1/2

What is the distance between the front corner of the eye and the corner of the nostril ?

CEMENTUM ANUALI is the only scientific almost 100 percent accurate test for aging deer. It invloves taking a tooth and slicing a thin pc off and counting yearly rings. There is a place in Vernon Texas that does it. Deer eat so many different things in so many different areas, some browse close to the ground and get a lot of sand, some eat only the softest of foods...making wear aging tough.

2-2.5 depending on soil and brows they are eating.
