Big Pa. Buck Down.

Well guys today was a good day in the Pa. woods. I had an encounter with a shooter Monday to no avail, so I returned to the woods today with high hopes. I decided to head out around 12 today as it was beautiful outside and I figured I would sit until dark. I was on stand by noon and within 5 mins. I had a spike and a doe come out about 50 yds. away. I sat watching them but kept hearing some leaves rustling around slightly behind me. I didn't see anything and figured it was a tree rat. I few mins. later I heard a a stick break and definate foot steps from the same area, no doubt a deer. I couldn't see anything but kept surveying the woods, finally picking out movement in the dense brush. All I saw was rack and I instantly went into serious hunt mode. From the little bit I could see, this was a shooter. I watched him in the brush only to see him heading the wrong way. My heart dropped, but just for an instant as he decided to turn around and head towards the field where the deer were feeding. To get there he had to cross 20 yds. in front of me, we were back on, the heart was in overdrive and the focus was on the shot to be made. I watched him disappear behind a bush and watched him moving through small opening taking his time to take in his surroundings. Finally after a min. his rack started to emerge and I came to full draw, a few more steps and I grunted him to a stop, settled the pin and let the arrow fly. He was quartering away but I saw the shot hit near the liver and angle forward coming out the other side. Now up to this point I had not counted points or payed attention to the rack. I knew he was mature and had great mass throughout what I could see of the rack. Back to the hunt, he took off like a bat out of hell tearing through the woods. I thought I heard him go down, but was not sure, checking the clock, I saw it was 12:30, I had hunted a whopping 30 minutes! I backed out and waited 4 hours to go look for him. My two friends and I tracked him for about 40 yds. picking up blood here and there, but nothing heavy. I looked up and saw him lying 30 yds. ahead. We were all surprised when I picked up the rack and saw he was a giant 6 Pt:jaw:. I had said P&Y when I told my friends about his size, as he looked huge from what I saw of him. I had him scored by an official scorer and he grossed 126 4/8. He nets 122 7/8 after deductions. All in all a bruiser of a 6 pt. I couldn't be happier!

Bigger pictures. Not big on the one in the cart, but gives a good idea of this deers size.

Very nice buck, great tine length. Have you checked the teeth yet? I would be interested in the age of this buck, the body size makes me think it is a 3.5 year old deer, little hard to tell by the pictures. But if you look at his head, it appears you nailed him in his prime.

The guy that measured him said he was a young deer. 3.5 was his guess and he has gone over a ton of deer. His eye to nose measurement was 7 in. He said a really mature buck is usually 7.5 in.

Thanks for all the congrats guys and gals. I am super happy with him. I was blown away by his size and the fact that he would almost make book being a 6 pt. Truth is, I will probably never see or shoot a 6 pt. like him again. The guy that scored him said it was the biggest 6 he has ever personally seen.

Awesome buck, congrats. Pennsylvania grows 'em big!

Just think, if that same buck was in southwestern, (Greene Co.) PA, you wouldn't be able to shoot it, in our county you have to have atleast 4 points to one side in order for the deer to be legal due to the antler restrictions.

Someone else said that as well, that is crazy. I shot a 10 pt. two years ago that grossed mid 130's and netted 128 5/8's after deductions. In your neck of the woods he would have been legal. Now when I held this big 6 up next to that mount. It wasn't even close, the 10 has more points, but that is it. This 6 is much bigger in every other way, mass, tine length, spread. I could fit the 10 pt. rack inside the big 6. I would have had a heart attack if I had to let him walk by....then again, I didn't know he was a six until we found him.
