Would you have taken him?

This buck filled my bonus bow stamp and ended my bow season.

I was impressed by his massive bases even though he didn't have the big spread.

Now I'm starting to second guess my self as I am all done and rut is still a few weeks away.

My question to others, would you have taken him if it ended your bow season? As he is one of my top 2-3 bucks with a bow, I'll miss rut with a smile.:)

I definately would have taken him! I don't bowhunt yet, for lack of a bow, but hopefully soon! I personally wouldn't ever pass up a buck of any size, unless I had consistantly been seeing buck, and a spike was in front of me. Even then I'm not sure I would. In my book any buck is a trophy! And he has a unique rack! Great deer!

I would have taken him, he has a lot of cool character

BigDaddy12t 10-20-2010 05:46 PM

Without a doubt! I would take him ANYTIME! Congrats!

V8Ranger 10-20-2010 05:49 PM

Don't beat your self up, That s a very nice buck, lots of character. A trophy for sure....

HardwoodHunter 10-20-2010 05:55 PM

Any deer with a bow is a prize in itself. To get a buck like that, with a lot of character and everything. That's just a major bonus. What a thick base on it too, congrats!

Diesel77 10-20-2010 05:58 PM

Cool buck, you can always bow hunt the gun seasons too so lots more hunting yet for bucks.

BUCKMARK 10-20-2010 06:42 PM

let me think............hell yes...nice buck....

woodyw333 10-20-2010 07:12 PM

2 Lunger 10-20-2010 10:54 PM

A mature deer for sure.

Ohboy 10-21-2010 03:52 AM

very cool looking rack, i defenitly would've taken him. he will look good on a wall plaque or skull mount

YooperMike 10-21-2010 05:02 AM

Congrats on a good buck! Very subjective question, and depending on where someone hunts, you'll get a different answer. For me, in Central IL on my personal lease, that deer walks if I've only got one buck tag. Rifle season back home in the U.P. he doesn't take another step.

JNM86WVU 10-21-2010 05:40 AM

Great deer with unique qualities.. Not a chance that deer would still be walking.. Really after being skunked last year in Bow Season (too selective), I think back on the ones that I should have taken instead of the one I shouldn't.. And like someone else already said, Rifle Season is right around the corner..

UPHunter08 10-21-2010 07:06 AM

You bet...that's a cool looking rack. Anything unique (e.g. missing brow tines, tall racks like yours, etc) are interesting to look at. Well done!

Hunt4Life23 10-21-2010 08:17 AM

i would of taken him, very nice looking rack and he is an older deer just lacks spread which is fine. he is still a great buck and an awesome accomplishment to take with the bow. congrats

Canuck33 10-21-2010 08:19 AM

He is a mature buck with great character don't second guess he is a trophy congrats

schester14 10-21-2010 08:52 AM

you are in MD and your tags are filled already?

lovethebigguns 10-21-2010 09:01 AM

Yes sir, I would've have taken him in a heart beat. Very nice deer!

jklink 10-21-2010 11:08 AM

Not sure if he would be legal where I hunt in Texas. Is his inside spread 13" or greater? Most counties in Texas have gone to the rule where they upped the number from one buck to two bucks, but one has to have an inside spread of at least 13 inches and the other has to have at least one unbranched antler. Rule makes no sense to me and can start a whole nother huge debate. I have seen many young deer with wide spreads and plenty of old mature brutes that are heavy and go straight up. BTW, If I could have convinced myself he was at least 13", I would have shot him too.
Congrats

He reminds me a lot of the buck I shot last year. I too doubted myself, although yours looks a little bigger. My guy had short tines and a small spread, but like your buck and very good mass, and was a mature deer. he ended up only scoring 118 but at the end of the day, the fact that he was an older buck made it worth while to me, as I hope it did for you as well. Nice job!

wis_bow_huntr 10-22-2010 09:11 AM

Dont kick yourself on any buck with character I dont care if its a fork or a 30 pointer if it has character its something youll always remember. I would not have passed him up. Im after an 8 pointer right now, not real wide at all kinda like yours with a lot of character to it. You should be proud there bud! Congrats!!!!

A Non-Typical 11pt that dressed out to 197lbs and had 3 main beams.
