question on bow choice
 

I have recently had rotator cuff problems and am needing to go to a lower poundage draw weight. I am thinking between 50 and 55 lbs is probably where I will be at. Question is do any of yall have any recomendations on which bow will get me the best speed with a 400 grain arrow? As most everyone I am looking at getting as close to the magical 300fps that I can. The bows I have been looking at so far have been the PSE X-force and the High Country Iron mase. Any other options would be appreciated and I will try to find a dealer close to take them for a test drive..

Im not sure about those bows but beware of the draw cycles. The speed bows are sometimes a booger to pull. That can cause some trouble to your shoulder. I wouldn't worry about the speed as much as the shoulder.

Good advice! We've all jumped on the speed band wagon, don't worry about the speed. Go shoot some and see which one works for you best. Remember the number on thing is to get out and enjoy the woods and God's creation.

Thanks for the advice. The bow I have right now is set at 63 lbs and averages 243 fps and it is good for the deer we have in this part of the country but I can only shoot it a couple times before the shoulder starts hurting. I am just concerned with dropping 10 lbs on the pull and loosing the penitration that I will be wounding the deer and if I am not confident that I can put the deer down every time (even though I know that is not going to happen) then I would have to give it up. It seems that the faster the bow is rated then the more kinetic energy can be transfered. Any advice and set ups (bow, arrow weight, ect.) would be appreciated also. Just trying to keep my mind open to different things and well informed.

First off,you do not transfer KE for bowhunting purposes.That is a gun hunting term.We are trying to cut our way through an animal.

The only time we really even concern ourselves with KE or momentum is on a heavy bone hit (or thick hyde )and mainly the shoulder hits which take extreme energy levels to penetrate through anyway.

Ribs can cause some issue on really low energy setups but I believe that not to be an issue for you.



I shot my best buck with a bow set at 53#'s due to shoulder issues as well.This bow was only rated at 305 fps IBO and was in the 240 fps range with hunting arrow at my 28" draw length.

I agree with the above.Stay away from speed bows.Draw cycles will do more harm than good.

My son shot completely through his buck last year with a 40# bow at 23" draw length.The arrow stuck in a tree on the other side.

Find something comfortable and imo,build a high foc arrow with a cut on contact type head and have fun.

I get complete pass thrus with 170fps 550gr longbow setup. The shoulder is still something I stay away from. With longbow or compound.

Thanks guys.. I guess I'll hit the bow shop and shoot everything they have set up close to the 50 lb draw wieght. I do have one more question though. I am using the muzzy 3 blade right now do yall think it would be better to use the cut on contact style like maybe the 2 blade rage? I have been thinking about swappin over anyway but have been hearing alot of horror stories about them opening up in flight and planing the arrow away.

NO,stay away from mechanical with low poundage.(especially large cut)I did use Rocket Steelheads at 53#'s but they are a small cut head and out penetrate most 3 blade fixed heads on the market.Take a look at Magnus 2 blade stingers or even the 4 blade Buzzcuts.

Going to low poundage and then shooting a speed bow would defeat the purpose of what you are trying to accomplish.

Shooting 50# to 55# I would stick with a solid fixed blade head and stay away from the mechanicals. There are several good choices including Slick Tricks, G5 Strikers, etc.
