Does anyone use a four wheeler(ATV) for hunting?

I am in the process of purchasing a four wheeler and I was wondering if any of u have any ideas on brand and size and etc. I have never owned one before and really dont know which ones to stay away from or which ones are the best deals.

I have a Artic cat and have been using it for two years ,Never been any problems .Mine is full time 4x4 and sometimes it would be nice if it wasn't but that would be the only thing I would change . I looked at them all and just picked the best deal . Lots of Luck.

Check out the Kawasaki Prarie lin-up.One of the best,hands down.I own a Polaris Sportsman and swore this was the baddest quad around until I ran into the 650 Kaw!!! What a machine. I've had the privilage of riding a good number of makes and models but I strongly believe this is the quad to own.

Forestore, you have this post on both this and the deerhunting section. You can't do this. It is in the rules. One of the posts will probablly be locked. It is called spamming and it is in the rules that you can not do it. Just a little tip for the future.

P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^)

Oh, I am sorry buck magnet, I didnt relize that was considered spamming. I posted in both because I didnt know if all the people in the bowhunting forum posted in the other forum as well and I wanted to get as many opinions as possible. I am sorry. I didnt know and wasnt trying to get into trouble.

SPAMMING?????

Sounds like a good question being asked in different forums to get answers from a broader audience.
Wish I had a good answer. I know Ive ridden a few, and if I were to buy, Id want one I could switch from 2 to 4 wheel drive and one with independant front and rear suspensions.

just remember to get permission from the land owner before you use it on someone elses property. some people really hate these machines for hunting.

here in idaho we get alot of snow during hunting season and a large motor with 4 wheel drive is a must. and if you can make it up a hill you can always winch up , i have gotten out 3 bull elk in the last 4 years whole. it takes time but its sure better then quarterin and packin. we uasually have to ride double to get the traction needed to pull. just remmember 4 wheel drive 500 or more cc and a winch after that any model will do

Honda Rancher. Here in Ky. you need a fourwheeler that can climb hills and isnt top heavy. Honda is the way to go.

I have the Honda Rubicon. It is a nice machine. 500cc motor, all time 4 wheel drive. The only thing I wish it had was the 2 wheel drive option, but that would just be for play time. I have never had any problems with the machine. I have a 60" plow for this guy and it has no troubles trying to move a bunch of snow. It can handle about anything you can throw at it. I ride with a few polaris boys and I have went places they could not or they didn't dare!! Oh yeah, and my honda was made in the states too! If you have any specific questions on my Honda feel free to shoot me an email.

as far as huntin goes,i mostly use mine or haulin my stands or deer. i own a yamaha grizzly and itll go like a tank,but its top-heavy and big.the suzuki and arctic catslook pretty stable.i think if you stay around the 400cc or less you should be fine.as far as the best goes,thats personal preference.when you get one though,GET INSURANCE

The classic Chevy vs. Ford arguement. Everyone's going to have a different opinion on this. I have a 2000 model Polaris Explorer, and won't own anything other than a Polaris, but I also realize that there are many other good quads out there. However, for riding comfort, I haven't seen anything out there with the suspension travel of the Polaris, and that makes all the difference in the world on bumpy roads. The switchable 2/4 wheel drive option is very nice, too. My next quad will be a Sportsman with the true independent rear suspension...may even step up to the 700cc model. What a hoss!

Il bowman

I am with you on the Rubicon(AWESOME)machine.I would think that it might be a bit more than someone getting their first 4 wheeler might need but they sure are fun and practically unstoppible.Honda also has a 650 coming out this year and it should burry the 650 Kawasaki.

I have never really needed the 2 wheel option but it already turns sharper than some other brands that are 2 wheel drive.

The Rubicon is a revolutionary design and has had things done with it that no other machine will even come close to matching.

I would suggest a Recon or Rancher from Honda for a starter but if you have the money,go for the Rubicon or the new 650 coming out later this year.

I will say that a 4 wheeler has it's place in hunting but really needs to stay in the truck untill a deer is down and you want to retrieve it.It is also helpful in early scouting and hanging stands early in the year.They are also great for just playing around and having a good time.

You say that you have never owned 1 so let me give a little piece of advice.GET A RIDING COURSE,these can be very dangerous and can even kill someone if it ends up on top of you.Mine weighs a little over 600 pounds and most are around 500,don't let it get on top of you.

I also don't really know of any that you need to stay away from,most are good machines.

I also agree that you need to get insurance,most homeowners policies will not cover them,even if they are stolen out of your garage.Car insurance doesn't cover them if they fall out of a truck either,unless you have it added.

Any brand in a 350/400 class or better.
I have a 400 4x4 and it will do all I need. We haul our tower blinds to their location on a low bow utitlty trailer being pulled by our atv's. 300 and 400 cc models. I can't think of any harder hunting work than that.

Suzuki's got a new 400 out called an eiger, it goes for $5199. give it a look. the best cc for the dollar.
Other than that:
Honda= rancher 350 or 450 es
Yamaha = kodiak or big bear
Kawasaki= prarie 400 or new 360
artic cat = 400i
Polaris= sportsman 400
The reason I listed these models and not the new big bores is because of it being your first quad. Most people don't want to spend over $7000.00 on thier first quad.
