Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
Like a lot of people on this forum I must confess that I am a broadhead junkie and I have found a number of broadheads that I can live with. Like most hunters here I have tried Muzzy' s. As much as I like their interlocking blades and their flight characteristics I remain puzzled as to, what appears to me, Muzzy' s lack of attention to blade sharpness. In all respects, this is a quality head and design except for blade sharpness. Compared to Rocky Mountain, NAP, and many other manufacturers, Muzzy blades seem relatively less sharp to me. Basically, this distills down to a confidence issue for me because, like everyone else, I want to shoot the sharpest blades I can. Your comments as to whether this is imagined on my part or if you think that the apparent lack of relative sharpness is even an issue to consider, would be appreciated.

RE: Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
Muzzy has improved the blade sharpness over the last year. Even before that I found them " sharp enough" The new heads are better yet, but I do agree they do not compare with those of say Rocky Mtn, or steel force. If a head will shave hair off my arm I am satisfied.

RE: Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
Muzzys are plenty sharp as far as I' m concerned. Never had any trouble with them yet. All I know is they' ll cut you if you' re not careful. Indians killed critters with sharpened rocks, muzzys are a site better. elknut1 |
RE: Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
That' s exactly why I switched to wasp' s sst' s about 3 years ago.

RE: Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
I' ve gott' n passthrus on hogs with muzzy' s so they cant be all that bad . Last year one of the deer I killed had a broken off mechanical blade in his leg , dont think that will happen with a muzzy .

RE: Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
I have not had any problems with muzzys....i have used them right out of the box with awesome results. I do know that some guys sharpen them before they will hunt with them though.

RE: Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
Muzzy' s are a quality BH, and the blade sharpness
was never a concern, nor a problem either. However, I believe I' ll be back with my trusty old Wasp' s this fall. Gonna give the " Boss" a try, just a smaller version of the SST. |
RE: Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
I have never had a new Muzzy blade unable to shave hair on my arm....thats sharp enough.

RE: Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
The newer ones do seem to hold an edge better. I always touch up my muzzys with a tru angle broadhead sharpener a couple of times each season. Broadheads can dull slightly over time just sitting in a quiver.
I have never had a muzzy blade that wasnt razor sharp right out of the package. |
RE: Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
That is the main reason I don' t hunt with them. I want a scapel sharp broadhead
and is why I shoot Thunderheads. Just imagine if Muzzy could get them as sharp as NAP broadheads. What a great broadhead they would be. |
RE: Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
I made the switch to Muzzy' s last year and the sharpness issue is my only complaint. I thought they weren' t quite as sharp as the other broadheads I had been using. I know they are a quality head and I killed deer with them last year, but I' d like to see them a bit sharper since I plan on staying with them for a while.

RE: Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
miled1, I know what you are talking about. I have found Muzzy' s to be pretty sharp out of the package, but I can get them sharper on a fine diamond hone. Just tales a few seconds. I use the four bladed heads and use an s-24. Works well.

RE: Muzzy Broadhead Sharpness
I' ve shot them for 6 years now and every package I' ve picked up will shave hair.......IMHO and IME, I don' t see how having them any sharper than that will be beneficial.

All Muzzy's are just plain dull.
Every broadhead I buy, I take out of the package and see if it will shave the hairs off the back of my hand, I haven't had one Muzzy do this, I like to mess with my die hard muzzy friends with this. 2 years ago I decided to join the rage train, when hit well, nothing smokes em like a rage broadhead (2 blade), these however are also fairly dull. But last year I shot a 145" 8 point almost straight down, hit the back edge of his shoulder blade, and only got about 4" of penetration. Some of you are probably wondering what equipment Mathews Switchback XT set 70lbs with 27.5" draw length pushing Easton Axis FMJ's. Heartbreak to say the least, my buddy arrowed the deer 3 weeks later with a NAP thunderhead. At Gander Mountain I saw the NAP Nightmare's, opened the package and WOW, razor sharp, by the middle of October I had no hair on my hand from showing every other bow hunter I saw how sharp these heads were. Confidence is everything, pick what makes you comfortable, I recommend opening a package of NAP's and see for yourself.

Everybody is sayin that they kill deer just fine, and a lot of people get a lot of passthru's. Maybe muzzy knows that and saves money, keeping costs low, by not spending time or resources sharpening something that is sharp enough. They always work for me.

I like my muzzys. They are tough and they come sharp enough for me out of the package. I cut myself with them the other day
