Homemade Deer Mineral Recipe

I am just curious how many of you used it from last year when I posted it?

Also I am also curious what your results might have been.

Mine are still outstanding. From May 10th to June 10th - 25 pictures of which had 33 deer in them. Min. of 10 deer had antlers.

Horntagger- I used it last year with so so results. I put out 150#' s in July of last year. The deer did hit the sites but not like I was expecting. I think that if I would have put them out a little earlier they would have showed more activity. However this year all the sights are being used. It was almost like it took the deer quite a while to find the sites and acutally start using them. Several of the sites have been hit hard here recently. I will take some pics of the sites soon and post them so that you can see what I am talking about.

My buddy and I used it last year, but got it put out kind of late but they attacked it pretty much instantly. In fact during turkey season this year they seemed to have seriously increased activity around them. A great recipe and in fact there were some pretty nice buck around last year, Expecting to see better ones this year, we are pretty sure 3 8pts survived the season and the winter so we' ll see how big they get and if the minerals helped at all.

All deer except for this last one was 2002 this buck is 2001.

Glad some of you are getting results. This is after I think four years of use.

Already had 25 pictures in 30 days of 33 deer with 10 of them for sure bucks from May 10th to June 10th. They have to step up and out of the hole now.

I ended up using 300 lbs last year and made myself stop. Turkey season they finished all of last year up and I just refeshen it up last weekend.

We used it last year and the deer hit it pretty heavy. They dug it out in 2 locations where we had it in the ground and ate a stump that we just pured it on. We renewed 2 of our locations so far and plan to start a new one. I know it is a little late but I hope it' ll still provide the exta nutrients they need.

Where I hunt there is a lot of cattle around so the ranchers have out salt and mineral for their livestock. Deer will use these tubs. Is there anything in this mixture that will draw them to this spot more?

Horntagger, Great Pics! :D

I' ve used that recipe (minus the stock salt) for about 10 years and it has always worked very well. The only things different I do, is I pour it on a stump instead of the ground, and I replenish it more often. They usually eat it all gone fairly quick. I' m hoping to get a game cam this year to set up on our mineral sites. One thing I have noticed over the years, is that they usually hit our sites at night. Very rarely have I seen them on it during the day. Do you find the same?

Have you ever mixed it with water and let it soak in the ground instead of mixting it with the soil?

Hey bob

I don' t know what other folks do, but I can tell you that from my experience of using for quite a while....we prefer to pour it dry, over a fairly solid stump...on it and around it. I use about about (2) 5 gallon bucket fulls at a time. The stump seems to absorb the minerals as well as the surrounding soil. Works very well for us. Theres no need to mix it with water...(especially this year :().

NBA - I don' t think it will draw them off of the mineral and salt for the cows unless you put it on the path that they travel and cut them off before they get to it is my only suggestion.

WVHunter - In my studies of deer movement 80% of the movement is at night with no hunting pressure so yes alot of my pictures are at night.

Just - you should be able to get most of the mineral at a CO-OP or any place that sells cattle feed.

Xibow - Yes you can make multiple location but I would not put less than 100 lbs in one spot. I typical start the year out with 200 lbs in the fawning and antler growth season. Then in the fall put in one last 100 lbs.

No water is needed it will draw moisture out of the ground typically in that area and it should rain something enough to mix it with the soil. I do at least twice a year turn ground over with a shovel. Becuase they beat it down with the hooves.

I spent the weekend night getting 1998, 1999, part of 2002 and all of 2003 hope this you will enjoy the pictures from mineral in 2003.

Horntagger,
I will say this, I tried it last year with very little results. But this year I tried it again on a new lease I got in. And the only thing I can say is that I must have put it in a bad spot last year because the three spots I put out on my lease are being demolished. I made all three in April and just checked them for the first time last week. It looks like someone has been in there with a rototiller. It' s great stuff, I' m glad I tried it. Thanks for the recipe.
