Hey all you Rocky Mountain Elk hunters!!??
This is kind of a survey . . .
Which week in September would be your first choice to go after Elk with a bow? 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc . . .? And a little bit of why. Thanking you in advance . . . |
If I were limited to only one week, I'd pick the last week of archery season because it's almost always cooler then, the black powder guys are gone, a lot of archers have given up and are home on the couch, and the elk are more cranked up by then.

I've also heard the last week is typically the best. That's where I'll be this year for the first time! CAN'T WAIT.

Here in Idaho its Sept. 18-24. This is best because the Elk have begun to Rut. Calling gets into full swing and Bulls get crazy. BE SURE to buy your wolf tag too. only $11.00 they make a great rug.

My choice would be the Last week for rut reasons as well as a possibility of cooler weather.

Wolves are not much of an issue here in SE Wyoming . . . Sides . . . who needs a tag for a preditor? (lol)
Just kidding G&F guys!!!!!!!!!! Personally, I'm always in the woods on or near opening day (Labor Day outings) and the elk as well as mulies seem to still be up pretty high and fragmented. I can make an argument for each week in September, unfortunately my employer won't let me have all of Sept off! I think I'm leaning towards the latter part of the month this year. But will watch weather forcasts, predicted moisture/snowfall and temps. Seems like the ruts have been kicking off later and later these past few years. |
I would have to say that i have some of my best luck right after that first cold night. Usually that happens sometime in the last two weeks of season up here in northern ID. =)
