Cougar killed in 9 miles from my house

During second season shotgun some group kicked up this cougar in a tree and they called the dnr to see if they can shoot it. They got the thumbs up so they shot it and the guy is getting a mount for it.

It was shot 9 miles from my house. My uncle works with some guy that was in the group. The guy was on tv for it.

Sorry this picture was off of my phone.

Was this the one killed near Marengo?

I had heard there have been a few sightings this year... And only one killed...

IL-Cornfed 01-08-2010 12:33 PM

Iowa has had a few cougar kills now in just the last couple seasons! They'v also had a couple of roadkills as well. Very interesting. You guys cankepp 'em all and I hope they stay on YOUR side of the River! I don't want to see what they could do to a deer herd!

IOWABUCKHUNTR 01-08-2010 12:37 PM

No kidding... If we start getting sightings around here, it may look like a scene from a warzone, I personally would lead the hunt...

I can just see it now... "Forget the 'yotes! We got us a kitty on the run!"

Yeah it was over by marengo.
Some kids in school were talking about it and this kid lives in marengo and his grandpa has land right next to where it was shot.

You all may think im talking bs but last year me and my dad saw a very large print that looked like a cats where I hunt. It was in the snow but the problem was we could only find a few of them. It was bigger than an normal coyote track.

I saved it off of another website.

In PA, if that were to happen the PGC would say they don't exist. :eek2: But if you shot it, you would be in deep trouble even though it didn't exist. :s2:

They have been seen over here too. They are protected over here also and the only way they can legally be shot is if they threaten a human.

They killed one less than a mile from my house last week. I've got two sets of tracks located and will be after them this weekend. Hopefully I'll have some pics by sunday!

We dance around them where I live. They look upon us as the "other white" meat.

Big Z 01-09-2010 09:50 AM

Hahaha the easterners were scared of the kitty :D

That's the way I look at it too. Many, and I mean many around my area claim to have seen mountain lions. Some credible people but until I see one myself I'll always have doubts. Then, everyone can call my sighting BS as well. :)

One that was actually photo'd over in the Poconos was immediately dismissed as a "pet" that got loose.

There has been rumors about Big cats roaming around over here in S IL in the River bottoms close to home.

I did Not pay much attention to them until I saw the/a Cougar. There really was no mistaking what it was. It is the only time I have seen one but I won't forget it.

There are several Bobcats around though. No comparison at all!!:guiness:

Very nice cat! They definitely need to let hunters harvest more of them.

Thats the local assumption anyways, which doesnt mean much to me.

yeah probably so

2 Lunger 01-10-2010 08:57 PM

If I remember right this was a female cat. I would say you have a breeding population now.

There have been several cat sightings in the past so im sure a breeding problem would have happend a long time ago.

No dice on hunting them this weekend. Saw several sets of tracks but none came in to the calls.

I'm guessing there have been cats in Iowa for quite some time. I was at a coon hunt in North West Missouri in the late 80's and one of the casts treed a lion during the hunt. We weren't that far from the Iowa line. They are and have been there.

Rob brings up a good point of conversation, often had within my hunting circles after too many Coors Original bottles...if given the chance in PA to shoot one, would you? Risk the notoriety of proving one was in PA, and the inevitable of going to jail? Kind of like the drinking game would you rather, but for rednecks like me :party0005:

Uncle_Buck 01-12-2010 08:47 AM

I believe the response from the PAGC would be that what you see there is a Bobcat, not a Mountain Lion. As Rob said, they don't exist in PA.
